Thanks for the comments all. I want to do it all above board - enough damage is already being done to the hobby so don't want to cause any bother etc. Fingers crossed as this site looks great. No main roads for a mile in any direction, very few buidlings and relatively easy access

Quite correct... however if you crashed anywhere on the farmers land you would have no rights to go onto his land to retrieve your model since this would be trespassing and you would also be liable for any damage, including environmental pollution if flying a nitro which spilled fuel.

So yeah... permission is NOT needed but it's always better get permission since there are far more downsides than upsides to not getting permission.

I would like to know where it is written .In which government legislation or caa guide lines does it say how far above ground does the air space come under control as i would hate to have someone fly or hover their model in my back garden.:-)

I've been quite lucky with this. When we rented the house we are in now ( off the farmer) I was only flying planks , and asked him if it was OK to fly in the fields out the back of my garden and he was fine about it. Now I'm getting into helis and although I have a large garden its surrounded by trees. I can hover around the garden but really wanted more space. So off I went up to see him again with a decent malt in my pocket. and my 500 to show him, came back with agreeing to me being able to fly on the grazing land where the cows aren't and he's agreed to cut me a small runway as well . It seems that some of the guest that stay in his converted barns have enjoyed watching me fly my planes and gliders.

I wouldn't fly nitro as most folk out here enjoy the peace , but I think if you approach the farmers in the right way you can get the result your after.

I do have some restrictions that I put forward , is I won't fly when young calf's are around and stick to the wheat fields , and if any guests complain I will pack up. The other thing I agreed with him that I won't let my mates come and fly and just restrict it to my brother and I and he was happy with that

That's pretty much what I'm proposing to do once I find out who owns the field.

Can anyone tell me if these are any sort of crops? I have no idea how recent these photos are - I'm planning to go scope it out one afternoon and knock on the nearest door. I'm hoping it's just some unused field.

Just noticed power lines or phone lines going right down the middle, so that's a big problem anyway. Hmm.. this is really frustrating!

Is there a farmer's forum where I can find out who owns a bit of land?

                            If local research fails:
