  • Holiday Cash

We're off on our main annual family hols in a few weeks, and I'm thinking about how to carry our spending money.

Traditionally, I've always been one for travellers cheques as I like the idea that they're covered by travel insurance in the event that they get nicked or lost, rather than cash.

But nowadays we have the option of pre-paid credit cards, which seems a good idea in principal - the same security but without the hassle of having to actually change and collect local currency from bureaux.

    Any thoughts?

I've holidayed in some dodgy locations (yeah, it's called picturesque and scenic:))... take some in every option (cards, cheques and cash) and some variety of currency ($$ always good) and then split the load between spouse and self including money belts and socks and room safes.

The emergency travellers cheque taped in a book or sown into the suitcase (that's two ideas I won't use again) gets swapped out for a fresh one next trip...cool thing is you expect to come back with some money...

I only ever take cash, split between myself and my wife. One credit card is taken for emergency use only and all other plastic is left at home.

Why? Cash can be used anywhere, no hidden charges and allows you to limit or control your spending. Granted it is not a "secure" form of carrying holiday money but as long as your careful no worries. Travellers cheques have always been a Royal pain in the ass for me. That said I don't go to any particularly exotic locations either.

          Just my 2p worth!

If you really intending to use Pre-Paid plastics, make sure youtry and use this as much as you can while keeping CASH with you at all times. The only concern with the prepaid cards are may not be taken for in small "corner" shops that usually women find attractive - for whatever reasons :svengo:

Having said that, try and maintain a balance between the use of cash and the plastic, mate.
