I stopped using Paypal when my account was hacked and they did nothing about explaining to me how it happened nor what was done to prevent further hacks.

Sadly they would have no way of knowing how your PayPal User Name and Password got into somebody elses hands, and they would probaly say your PC was compromised, not their system. If it was their system, they are legally required to disclose, and if necessary compensate. The US authorities now take the matter of Disclosure very seriously (I just traced the PayPal host IP - it is 66.211.168.82 and routes back to San Jose via New York)

I avoid using Paypal like the plague, using it only when I have no other options, but let me ask the following.

Paypal has a hole in it's system, called "Gifts", which people are using. . . . .it's Paypals issue that they are not earning any money out of this service, it's NOT the Customers fault. No-one is doing anything wrong (are they ?)

As a result of using this hole, Paypal are deliberately restricting use of YOUR money. . . . . isn't that effectively theft or Fraud ? (or some other criminal offence)
            Janek

Why does it always persist down at weekends ?
Well I was ripped off in the reverse way. I bought a hard drive on Ebay and I never received it. Their courier (citylink) just flat lied and said they tried twice to deliver it (which doesn't mean anything under UK selling regs anyway). The seller told me they had it sent back to them because they tried to deliver it and acted like it was my fault for not being in or something, so it was well known that the seller had both the item and my money but he was just deeply dishonest. I went through the long and drawnout 'dispute' process but Paypal sided with the seller because he sent them a tracking number (the kicker being that the tracking number wasn't even a citylink number, which just goes to show how brain-dead Paypal are).

I then appealed and won... but they still wouldn't give my money back since I had 'lost' the initial dispute! It was utterly insane.
Sheryl Hi!

This link might explain why you did not get your money back.

A true paypal mystery ....your thoughts please ... -- Page 1

It seems when PayPal gets into any problem, they chooses to take the easy option i.e. take money from whoever they can!! So they are not as good as they claim to be.

Internet scam is a BIG business - no gurantee is 100% watertight.
When you say they are keeping your money for 6 months, do you mean they wont allow you to transfer it to your bank account only, or that they also won't allow you to spend it by buying with your PayPal ballance?

If the latter - real bummer, but if the former then this won't affect those like me who have a low transaction volume and use the PayPal ballance exclusively for buying toys - I never transfer the cash back to my bank account (but often pay with a linked credit card).
basically i cant touch the funds full stop i tried to withdraw it and i cant and i cant spend it online either i cant touch it for 6 months.

im sure i read somewhere that thats illegal as they are profiting from the interest on your money.

there has got to be someone you can contact about this even if you just go round the internet sending emails to anyone conected with legal aspects.

paypal and ebay are running on thin ice with quite a lot of there ways of doing things but as let havnt been brought down.
I also use PayPal when buying from a number of online sites using a linked Credit Card (reserved exclusively for Online / Card Not Present transactions) because that means I don't have to give my CC details to so many different people, which is convienient, and reduces the security exposure for having the card compromised.

I am also very happy to send and receive via direct bank transfer - you don't give out any information that is not on a cheque - it is just a safe as using a cheque.
But remember - Paypal know ALL you details, Card and bank account etc etc & THEY CAN TAKE OR REMOVE FROM EITHER AT ANY TIME be warned !, any online site worth their salt will use a bank to process there detail offsite, using 3D secure as we do, I have no idea what your details are only the last 4 digits, the bank ie LloydsTSB in my case do the exchange. Plus 3D secure is as safe for both you and Us as traders as Chip and Pin. Eventually online traders will only be allowed to use 3D secure.

IF YOU HAVE A CARD MAKE SURE YOU REGISTER IT FOR 3D SECURE WITH YOUR BANK ! - SEE HERE

Things have moved on since PayPal started .... for the better, dont use them ....

I thought the same trillian but mines a debit card & not a direct debit funded bank account so i get charged too for sending as a gift.

I recently made a payment to the states, and the company there would not accept PayPal, but Western Union. I had to open an account there, using my credit card, and then email the seller with a number that they could go to their local Western Union branch and get paid out. Seemed to all work ok, got my goods less than 2 weeks later from California.

my brother got screwed for 1000 quid using weston union, they dont provide any guarantee etc.. (he did his research and they looked to be a reputable company in usa)

morol of his story - if you dont know the person/company dont send by weston union.

if im buying something from a well known member on here ive got no problems with using bank transfer.

nochex is another paypal alternative which ive had no problems with so far - but again they have there horror stories too if you research it.

I'm pretty sure they don't know my bank details, and they certainly don't have a Direct Debit mandate to pull money from my bank account.

I have a credit card regisetered with them; but if they get naughty with that, I believe the Consumer Credit Act will oblige the CC company to claw back the money from PP. Am I being naive there ?

I use PP because it's incredibly convenient, and because it takes the credit card processing out of the hands of those vendors who possibly shouldn't be trusted to get it right.
