Of course, that is true.
If it's about 500, I still would not think twice.
And even if it's about 50, I'd rather spend that money doing honest business with my lawyer than feeding it to a scammer.

All your solicitor is interested in is your money. ln some ways he`s a bigger crook than the scammer.
lf its 500 you could try the small claims court.
lf its 5000 what the hell were you doing in the first place. lf you see what l mean.
ln cases like this the bace ball bat has a much higher win rate than your solicitor wrighting a letter.

Just for balance I have to say I've never had a problem with PayPal. I've also never paid any fees either way when using the gift option which could well explain why PayPal are getting annoyed at the amount of money being transferred around via their infrastructure without them making a penny. I agree that, PayPal (and eBay) fees are pretty steep but if we constantly seek to evade them whilst still wanting to take advantage of their universal and easy-to use system then they will get stroppy.

I'm not justifying their witholding of funds because that's really out of order and they could have used other sanctions, but I do understand PayPal's need to run a business and not a charitable service.

Now that the banks are offering a faster payment scheme, rather than using payment as a gift though paypal you may as well use your bank online system.
My bank (halifax) is currently doing a faster payment system online - send the money and its registers in the recipients bank inside 2 hours and there are no charges when its within the UK.
For posted goods you don't have the "protection" of paypal, but if you were declaring it as a gift you didn't have that anyway.
I just used this to pay FL getting the 3% discount (not a credit card) and no delay on the order (except its at the P.O. and I can't get there to pick it up).

When you say they are keeping your money for 6 months, do you mean they wont allow you to transfer it to your bank account only, or that they also won't allow you to spend it by buying with your PayPal ballance?

If the latter - real bummer, but if the former then this won't affect those like me who have a low transaction volume and use the PayPal ballance exclusively for buying toys - I never transfer the cash back to my bank account (but often pay with a linked credit card).

The gift option works like this and its the same for everyone.If your account is funded there is no charge but if it comes from a bank or card you or the recipient pays the fees and thats how it always been.:)

I pay fees, even if I send money as "gift" and I make sure I have no "cash " credit with them and only use my CC. So far everything is OK (fingers crossed) but I have been using them only for 2 years or so.

Read various reports about PayPal in the past and I'm not totally convinced they're a professional organisation. You can't contact them by phone - in my experience.

Apart from taking leigal action. what else can we do? There must be sites somewhere which can tell us what to do when PayPal account goes pear shape or how to avoid such things hapenning. Post it here please if you know and help members. Surely we don't have to take it lying down, there must be some action we can take.

I'm all for saving money and trying to cut corners where I can and I have used the gift option myself a couple of times however it annoys me when I see 'Paypal ok but you pay the fees' shouldn't the seller pay the fees for asking to use the service? Why should Joe Bloggs pay extra? Would you do your food shopping if you had to pay an extra fee for the service of having it in your local branch of Tesco?
They are probably holding your money because of high gift usage which you could abuse to launder money etc.

On the flip side.

Paypal is a business, if everyone was making money through the use of gifts and Paypal wasn't, how long do you think this service would be around? then how are you going to safely transfer money? Are you going to trust someone that you hardly know to send you a £1k heli in the post after you have sent them XX amount of pounds that can't be proven?
Are you going to go to the bank to manually transfer or deposit? NO, and you know why, because its not convenient, it requires physically moving and doing it rather than clicking a few buttons.
Its 4%, thats 4p from every £1, 40p from every £10 etc, you can all afford big expensive helis running into hundreds, even thousands of pounds but can't afford to pay a 4% fee, where's the logic in that?
I'm broke as owt and only just making ends meet but I still manage to pay my fees along with the same bills as everyone else so why should I pay yours too?
Simple solution, if you don't like it, then don't use it.

The only 2 problems I have encountered with Paypal is 1. they favour the buyer regardless of who is in the right or wrong and 2. even if you have funds in your Paypal account they still sometimes debit your bank account. I had the latter happen to me not long ago and only found out after ringing Halifax to find out why I had been given a £35 bank charge.

Not having a dig at anyone in particular, just voicing my opinion from a business and personal point of view.

Well, 4% might be reasonable if they provided a reliable escrow service, but by nearly all reports they don't. They make it as hard as possible to file a complaint, and go out of their way to avoid all possible financial regulation.

It's really not that much more difficult to do a direct bank-to-bank transfer if you have online banking. The only reason I use paypal at all is because other people demand it, and occasionally because the alternative (trying to remember what my last "verifiedbyvisa" password was) is even more painful.

Neil, I actually agree with what you said and I too only have a Paypal account due to others requesting it ie eBay.
Is there a verified alternative to Paypal that could be used instead and that would be viable for eBay?

I also use PayPal when buying from a number of online sites using a linked Credit Card (reserved exclusively for Online / Card Not Present transactions) because that means I don't have to give my CC details to so many different people, which is convienient, and reduces the security exposure for having the card compromised.

I am also very happy to send and receive via direct bank transfer - you don't give out any information that is not on a cheque - it is just a safe as using a cheque.

:iagree::iagree: and that's why I use PayPal, particularly when I buy anything from Hong Kong or Tiwan. For buying anything in UK, never use PayPal nor intend to eithe (exceptions are for RCHA members only).
