I have a Sony Bravia 40" which I bought to replace a 42Plasma that went bang one day (literally the screen just cracked from top to bottom:eek:)
The Sony is great, Take a trip into Comet at Stanway they have loads on display and you can see the variences.
As for the Samsung, we have a 26" LCD as well, great picture but the black frame is an absolute dust magnet, if that sort of thing grates you dont buy the Samsung!
If you do buy an HD capable TV they will try to sell you a very over-priced HDMI cable at the same time.

Ignore all the sales rubbish that you hear, and don't buy it.

Plenty of very good quality cables cables available at a fraction of the price from places like www.ukhdmi.com and similar.

I would have thought they would have wanted to sell things in this current climate.
I was hoping to get to Marks Tey tomorrow to test the Trex 500 but the weather looks bloody awful winds gusting over 30mph :mad:

If it's definitely a 37" you are after then the Panasonic TH37PX80 Plasma is the way to go. Constantly voted the best TV around this size and price.

You can get it for around £500 but due to new models being released you will have to be quick as stock is disappearing very quickly.

With a 5 year guarantee you will find this hard to beat...

http://www.froogle.richersounds.com/showproduct.php?cda=showproduct&pid=PANA-TH37PX80

The Sony 'W' series are great TV's but have been plagued with backlight bleeding and clouding problems...

http://whathifi.com/forums/t/144898.aspx

Although the above thread relates to the 46" version, the other sizes have been affected aswell.

Worse still, Sony refuse to accept there is much of a problem.

If you get a good one, fine, but if you don't...?

With regard to HD (High Definition) anybody who knows anything about TV's will tell you that on a 37" set you won't be able to tell the difference between SD & HD unless you are sitting right on top of it.

Indeed HD won't be noticable until you get to at least a 42" set.

Plasma TV's have much deeper blacks and much more natural colour than LCD and also handle motion far, far better than them.

Some people will tell you about screen burn or image retention which are two different things.

On modern Plasma TV's screen burn is a thing of the past unless you leave a static image on screen for a day or two.

If you use it as a PC Monitor you may get a bit of minor image retention, but start watching TV again and it vanishes.

Also don't get suckered into what they look like instore. They set all the contrast, brightness and colour settings etc ridiculously high due to the environment they are in.

You couldn't watch them at these settings at home!

Also they often run DVD's through them.

Ask for the remotes and set them all at about half way - whilst it will be slightly different at home, you will be able to compare them better.

Make sure you watch SD TV on them too. BBC1 etc, then you can see how they handle SD which is probably what you will watch most of.

Don't let them fob you off with excuses like "it's not connected to an aerial" or "the signal isn't good here". If they want a sale they will move things around for you.

In Curry's I got them to move all my shortlist sets side by side so I could compare them.

If they won't do this, go to another store.

Finally, make sure 37" is the right size for you. Many, many people buy a flat screen only to find that after a few days it "shrinks" leaving them wishing they had bought a larger size.

How far away will you be sitting from it?

Trust me, if it is a 37" TV you want get in quick and buy the Panasonic TH37PX80 before they vanish. I have recently bought 2 of them and at the price they are absolutely awesome.

The bottom line is trust your own eyes really - If YOU like it then buy it, but be aware of some of the "tricks of the trade" and possible problems I have highlighted above.

Happy viewing

Gaz :)

I would love to have bought a 52" or larger but I sit about 8 foot from the TV and it would just have been silly.

you do need to take the distance you sit from the screen into account, but I'm guessing this is why you are inquiring about a 37"

All excellent advice with just one point on the quote above.

If you are sitting at the right distance to be viewing a 37" set you certainly can tell the difference between a SD and an HD source, but as you mention elsewhere in your advice, people often buy something too small for the distance they actually view at so in that case, yes, it will make little difference if you are sitting too far away.

My front room is only 15 x 15 ft anything bigger would just look silly in it, we went through sizes last year with the bit off paper on the wall showing different tv sizes and 37 inch is the right size, for the front room.

one sofa is roughly 8ft away directly infront off where i was going to mount it and the other 2 seat sofa is off a angle about 6 feet away so im not a great distance away from it, ill get the tele size thingy again today just to make sure its the right size

thanks for the advise guys really useful stuff has been posted

i work for sky and the panasonic's are spot on cracking pic on sky HD, there is 31 HD channels at the mo and there adding to them all the time. Cant go wrong with a sony bravia either, sky hd was built in conjunction with sony bravia.

If this is where you will be sitting, 37" is the perfect size.

As a rule you can work out the ideal set by either multiplying the screen size by 2.5 to give the best viewing distance in inches or, if you know your viewing distance in feet multiply it by 4.8 to give the best screen size.

I'd Still go with the Panasonic though - it really is a belter.

I've got a gap where I want to fit a nice decent sized plasma/LCD. The gap is 50" across. I know dimensions are diaganol for screen size, but any guidelines for what size I could fit in this gap. Was thinking around the 46" mark...what do you think?

Hi Balders,

Obviously a 46" will fit your gap (so to speak :blush5:) but it's not about that really.

Having too big a TV will ruin your maximum viewing pleasure just as much as having one that is too small.

If you sit too close to a TV you will see the pixels which is not good.

So, first things 1st:

1. What will your viewing distance be?

2. What is your budget?

3. Do you intend to use a home cinema surround system?

Get it quickly fatmantom, it's going out of stock very quickly due to new models being brought out soon.

Once they are gone that's it.

Here's a good place to start...

Good Luck and you WILL love it :)

Just a thought...

If your viewing distance is nearer 9 feet and over, seriously consider the 42" version shown here...
