  • Life after Eflite

Hi Guys. A few weeks ago i bought a blade msrx for indoor flying. Years ago i owned a CX2 and binned it after becoming frustrated at its poor build quality and fragility. Clearly the tears of the past had become dummed down and that's how the msrx came about.
First to admit that i'm still learning but the msrx was not the easiest heli to get off the ground without slamming it into the nearest solid object. Usually aft and to port. Despite ASX3, the tail does what it wants and when corrected, the heli rises and again moves to the left..
I didn't expect hands off hovering but i was expecting something a little better behaved with all the hype given to it by Hobby Horizon.
After reading lots of threads on forums and videos on you tube and replacing the swash plate with a Rakon
heli upgrade, the wee beastie actually started to behave itself and would lend itself to nose in hovering training. Great ! I hear you say, the winer has got it sorted... Nah !!! The damn thing will barely get off the ground now. Even on a new batt, it will only lift off the ground a few inches. I figure either the motor or the ESC has bitten the dust..
Called the model shop today to report the busted heli and to see if they wanted me to take in the heli alone or the whole kit.
I was told to rebox the lot and post it back to Horizon as they warranted the thing. Great ! So i have the expense of posting it back to Harlow for repair or replacement... Excellent !!!! NOT !!!!.

I suffer fools gladly but i don't suffer poor quality gladly.. I should have known not to buy Eflite again after the crappy Cx2 i had a few years ago.. Once replaced, this is going on Ebay... So now i'm looking for a new BNF micro with a brushless motor and a landing skid that doesn't break as soon as you look at it.. Does such a beast exist ?

Blade 130x....to be honest i've learnt loads using e-flite products. I started with the mcx2 (co-axial) then straight to the blade 4503d and have no had no regrets with either product. Do you use a sim at all?

Yes i use a sim. Like i said, after a number of adjustments to the servo arms and changing the swash, the heli behaved itself and i was able to start enjoying it. Now the motor or esc has a fault.
I'm concerned that the replacement will have an equally short lifespan, hence i'm seeking a brushless alternative.

Sure it's not your batteries? Altho to be fair my MCX2 batteries are still going strong three years later

Thats very odd I just sold my msrx today and it was rock solid non of the problems you were getting, it was even good outside in low wind conditions so maybe you got a duff one. I sold it because after getting the Nano CPX I just found it was too easy to fly, I was using mine with my DX6i TX. I know when I get the not lifting off problem with the Nano CPX it is usually because the main drive cog has slipped down the main shaft as it is not held in place with anything, so a quick squeeze to push the main shaft back in does the trick.

For the landing gear I used the almost unbreakable landing skids from rich at airtimerc they are the same skids that fit the Nano CPX, they are breakable but it usually take a month or so to do it.

The only other part I managed to break on my msrx was the blade holders, but other than that I liked the heli if I hadnt out grown it I would have kept it.

Yeah, maybe i just got a duff one.. I'm mad cos i have a bust foot and cant get out to fly my 250.. Not that the weather has lent itself to flying anyway..
I was considering a Trex 100x. Ok it doesn't have a brushless motor but i figured it would be better. I've trolled the web and found that even the trex is not without its issues.. Ah well... There is a brushless motor avail for the msrx but it requires a new frame to hold it and other mods to the pcb to convert.. Nothing is simple..lol..

Lol that's model heli's for you!!! i crashed my 450 3d during setting up my DX8 (schoolboy error) 4 weeks later i'm still finding bits that need replacing during the rebuild. it's a hobby...therfore lots of learning involved but it's given me so much joy with each little problem

The cx2 had its faults, but it was a few years ago. You can't build helis that survive all crashes but the msr came close. The msr-x isn't quite as robust in my experience, but it does fly very much like a proper heli. It should fly off to the left, as that is a basic problem with all helis. The 130-X is a better heli. All helis break very easily and cost a lot to fix. You have to enjoy the challenge, it's not a retail product.

i have only had to change my tail boom on my msrx, the hollow one was pants, the new 2mm solid cf shaft is brilliant! i cut it a bit longer than stock using my dremil, a dab of hot glue and it was ready for flight.
now it does what its told, within reason. . . yes it still bucks and skits about, but a dab of yaw sorts this and brings the machine to attention, its like slapping a badly behaved kid and watching the calming reaction (if you know what i mean. . . not literally lol) it is great now outside in the large field, swooping and diving all around, its now fun
I WOULD BE PATIENT.......IF I HAD THE TIME!!!

What do you expect of a relativly cheap little electric helicopter?, Its not a Trex700N

I would like a better motor for the msr-x. Perhaps one with brushes.

My kitchen and lounge aren't big enough to fly a 700 in... I wish....
£127 isn't cheap ( friend of mine bought blade 450 bnf flybarred for £130 new ) and i expect it to last at least till the warranty expires.. Is that too much to ask ???

Same friend has offered to loan me his msr till the msrx comes back from Horizon so i can keep on flying.. What a gem

The warranty expires on the first crash. The blade 450 isn't too bad at that price, it's a fashion victim. Opinion is divided on nylon servo gears. A weak link does protect the rest of the heli and the rest of the servo. The plastic body doesn't support the tail that well in a crash, but it is cheap. The bigger the heli, the more easily it gets damaged and the more it costs to fix. A 130-X flies much like a 450, but survives a lot better. Bigger helis are more fun to fly though.
