  • WINDY flying

I just got back from a gradually increasing wind at the flying field.
It started off as the sort of wind I always fly in and only a few hardy plankers dare to fly in.
    Then it got gradually windier.
On the third flight I had the heli tilted at 40 degrees to hold station. I stopped after that tank and it was a bit daft becuase it was pretty difficult to get the heli in through the car door safely on my own and everything was blowing about inside the car when I opened the door.
It seems no drama to land and takeoff a .50 in this kind of wind - but you have to take care with the manoevres and anything untried is off the agenda (I so wanted to prieouette hover inverted!).

I'm impressed with the 560/9254 - tail hold no issue backwards and sideways into the wind - pirouettes no sign of whipping either.

Just how much wind do you folks fly in?

i used to be of the opinion that anyone that didnt fly in strong wind was a poof, but tbh, i think ive matured in my appreciation of it all a little now. Sure i can fly in 35-40mph winds without too many problems, its got the power and stability, but its just not fun, and thats the whole point of this hobby!

Generally speaking i dont fly in much more than 15mph now, i just dont enjoy it otherwise

I have flown in winds gusting upto 25mph. Personaly I wouldnt bother if it gets worse than that as it's just not a pleasureable experience.
It's probably better to find a local slope & a foamy wing when it gets above 25mph.

I looked out the door this morning & almost didnt bother to go flying.
I had arranged to meet up with Pete tho so I headed out about 10.30am
When I got there it was blowing so hard I got straight back in the car for a warm. Pete showed up about 11am so I decided to fly the 500cf first as it handles the wind realy well. It was blowing about 25 at that point & I struggled with keeping a constant height so landed & handed the tx to pete, he calmly switches into idle 2 puts in full pitch & howls it up to a dot in the sky & just gets on with it, 2 mins of fast climbing turns & swooping decents like it wasnt windy at all. I realy hate him at times.
I was glad we had bothered to go over tho because not more than 20 minuets later the wind dropped to under 15mph & the sun came out.
We ended up having the best days flying so far this year putting a fist full more flights on the 500CF & 6 easily on the 450se v2.
I even got to play with the Knight 50 Sport again which just continues to impress the hell out of both me & Pete it's still the best heli I own but the cheepest in my fleet so cant be half bad I guess.
We ended up leaving at 3.30pm, four & a half hours of flying on a day I nearly hadnt bothered to go. Just goes to show you should never ever give up on the weather it just might be ok to get one or two flights in.

its gets pretty windy at our field as were surrounded by water, it has been faily blowy today and yesterday, only a few go out in it, couple of us with helis and even less with planks, best plank is the good old plastic pig, ARC cessna,. can fly them in just about any wind.

I flew my Raptor, K3D and my 500 today, the 500 I did have to have at a fair old angle for it not to go backwards. but has already been said by others, it can be done, just whats the point if your not gonna enjoy it.

I also came away from the field pretty dissapointed today as I had a couple of things I wanted to have a go at for the first time, but unfortunately the wind put a stop to that, on the bright side I got a fair bit of stick time in.

p.s. I love that bit where you turn away from the wind and let the heli shoot downwind, blimey it dont half move
              All the best

I like the way you can fly almost perfect circles at constant speed despite the wind.
Strange things happen to my loops though, they are nowhere near round unless i do them crosswind.

Those tail blades make a shrill noise as it passes sideways in front of you into the wind!

I enjoy a few flights even in very marginal weather becuase I'm starved of stick time.

I kept my eye on the wind yesterday, then finally, calm, complete (almost) calm, so out I trundle into the back garden with my Blade CX2, shaking like a leaf remembering last time I tried any heli outdoors.

On the whole a good flight, but broke a blade when my heli had a close encounter with a piece of metal archway. Also discovered that one short screw in the bottom blades was now too short to hold, so grounded till my parts come, (got some screws etc. on order).
