Are old .30 nitro helis of any use at all?

I was given a Kyosho Nexus that was never finished. It has a brand new OS 32 SX engine, all the original, unused electronics, including Futaba S3001 servos and a CSM gyro that's about the size of a box of washing powder

The way I see it, the heli, including all the electronics, is worthless, and the only part that's worth salvaging is the engine, so I was wondering, would it be worth trying to graft the engine into something like a T-Rex 500, just for something to do, or is it just not worth the effort?

if you have all the bits , it would be worth while completing the heli as to shoehorning the engine into a T500 id say you could be opening up a can of worms yes it can be done but would cost as in clutch finding the right gear ratio etc , this is considering you can get the engine to run , or you could get a cheap 6 channel tx and get it flying and raffle it of and donate the money to a worth while charity

There are a few bits missing (nothing serious) but it's been stored in a garage for so long that all the ball joints are rusty and I reckon by the time it was airworthy, it would have cost more than is justifiable.

I guess I'm just trying to convince myself to use the engine for something, rather than let it sit in a box for the rest of its life.

Im exactly the same dave. Never actually flew mine, first one I actually flew was a rappy. But I love the idea of putting some decent servos, a spartan and some carbon blades in one and seeing what they will actually do

I don't think it would be right to sell it, as I was given it as payment for building a website for an old lad, and on the understanding that I would finish it and get it flying but I was told it was a Raptor 30, so as you can imagine, I was a little disappointed to discover it was a Kyosho 30 and all but impossible to source parts for.

The poor fella thinks that because he paid 5 or 6 hundred for it 15 years ago and never flew it, that it's still worth good money today.

I'll have a think and maybe ask him if he'd mind me selling it, because to be honest, I can't see me ever doing anything with it and it'll just end up taking up more space.

Turn up at a flyin with it and go for a buzz around and it will get loads of attention.

It's nice to keep them flying and let's face it you will only get £100 for the lot on eBay so why not enjoy it now you know what your doing with it.

I was weighing it up, with a view to finishing it and I don't think there's enough collective pitch to enable it to do much of anything but I'm sure it could be (re)made better.

I was hoping that everyone would say 'don't bother with it, it's not worth it'... then when he asks if I've done anything with it, I could show him this thread... Now I'll have to finish it

Actually, it will be nice to see what these things flew like. I reckon I might try to get it flying with all the original electronics and see how bad they were.

My first nitro was a kyosho concept VR32, and that was about 2 years ago now. The nexus is very similar, and they are lovely machines interms of their build and mechanics IMO. I stopped flying mine because I knew it would take me six months and a million pounds to fix every crash.

you will be in for an interesting experience with those servos though

These are still plentiful on eBay, and you don't HAVE to replace the rusty parts - manually clean them up and they'll probably be ok!
Parts on eBay, albeit expensive, for those you really need. It'd still fetch around £100 when completed, and could be put in a scale fuzz or similar.. Servos don't NEED upgrading but it just depends on what you are used to flying! Remember, these servos were all that was available when the helis were designed, so perfectly adequate for the model - just maybe not the pilot.
I still have old analog JR servos in some models - ok you can't fling it around all "3D" like but certainly basic and a bit of sports flying.
My dad still flies with mechanical gyros, he can't get his head around all this modern HH lark!
