90 at the lesson didn't seem big but I think he said it was a 50 with extended tail. Other than tail length it was the same size as the 50 so I doubt I saw a real 90 size

Quite right, the electrics do quieten down very quickly as they move away. They only really become audible if you do something to make the blades fart. Then you hear it

The ones at the lesson certainly ran well enough. He even said they were worn and lacked power but were ok for training use. That's a pretty good indicator of robustness. Don't think the cows would like it though, hehehehe. They'd find me squashed in the field with cow pats all over me

      Thanks for all the replies.
Its good to know we are not alone.
I think a different mind set is required they are both chainsaws lol. but just get used to flying the raptor at a greater distance.
What is interesting is that we can stand there all day(in close proximity) and watch the lads at the club fly there 600 and 700's without even thinking of noise and danger,so from that I must deduce its a confidence issue that will have to be overcome with lots of practice.
Maybe put the 450 to one side and have a flying month or 2 on the nitro,I know one thing it's more stable in a breeze and with the smoke you definitely know where it is.

Me too. It's a good point and it helps with wind direction!!
Helicopter pilots get it up quicker.

When the blue light is flashing I am kidding.

Why simplify when it is so much simpler to complicate.

aye its all down to confidence but also the heli a bit to, as long as its reliable in time you'll become more relaxed flying it, so put that 450 to the side and get the nitro out

its the only way you'll overcome any fear

For me at least the nitro always feels a lot less threatening.

It is never going to start on its own unexpectedly and takes a little time to rev up.

              Largest nitro I own is a 50, biggest electric is a 90.

The sheer power and silence of the 90 just seems a lot more 'dangerous' than the slightly agricultural tones of a nitro.

I think once we gain confidence that the engine is ok we will start to move forward with flying bigger helis/nitro after all its been in the family a long while.

As has been said above nitro is safer on start up. A common reaction when you see a heli inadvertantly spool up really close to you (or your family) is to grab them and stop them from hurting. However big electrics have been designed specifically so the gears don't strip and the power is instant. This hurts, even a small 450 has the power to cut hands and fingers but bigger 600s and up start to cut arms and legs.

However grab a nitro by its head on spool up and yes it makes a lot of noise but the blades stop spinning immediately and after 30 secs of realising that its just screaming its head off - and not going anywhere - you pull the fuel line and it goes silent.

That said I also felt intimmidated by my Raptor 50, the best thing that happened to me was I binned my 450 and was left with only the 50 to fly, I soon got used to it and then it became my favourite heli with the 450 being demoted to only practice new moves My 700e intimidates me every time I plug the flight batteries in, I just know one day it will bite me and when it does (unlike my Nitros) there is nothing I can do about it.

Both my electric helis have soft start. It takes a while for them to spin up. For a few seconds the motor is at its weakest.

Having said that, it's a surprise I could well do without and never hope to meet.
