Can all you rex 500 flyers try it tonight please?

It'll be interesting to see what other people find...
Mine is going back to BobJ as he said it didn't look right.

    • good to know, i will send mine back aswell then if thats the case but i have a feeling it is normal. i had a look at mine and the swash doesn't move like yours does. that is just the collective slop in the links, swash, servos i think i'm seeing.

      • Just a little update on my 500 nodding.

in the week got new dampers and new bearings for the blade holder as one felt a little notchy. I replaced them and took the 500 down the field today, started her up and guess what the nodding was still there, probably worse than it was before. I got really ****ed off as you can imagine and started taking bits off and checking yet again to see if they were straight. including stripping the head and running it up with just the main rotor housing, again came up with nothing all seemed straight. so threw it back in the car swearing rather loudly.

Anyway was just about to come home and was talking to another heli pilot about it , so dug it out again and stuck some fresh batteries on it(keep with me im getting to the point of this ) and sure enough wobble although VERY minor in normal was still there, switched into idle up 1 and even more of a wobble, then I flicked into idle 2 which was set higher and the wobble stopped.

now this made me wonder, so in normal I upped the headspeed a little and the wobble is more of less non existant, the idle 1 I had it 100 70 100 points 1 and 3 were just a straight line, I put the middle point 2 up by 5% per go and at 80-85% the wobble vanishes. ok any of you guys any ideas as to whats going on, is it the dampers too soft too hard, is there some sympathetic oscolation going on, any clues as to what why and where would greatly help, so at least I can fly it just got to get into idle 2 asap.
        All the best
        Tony.

        • Hi Tony

Unless there is something else going on nodding is always head speed related, it sounds like your head speed is way too low, small models like to really crack some head speed.

          • First thing to do is disconnect your blade holder control link to see if the bearings are overtensioned..i.e. Notchy...do both sides It should be quite free.

Particularly with the 500 I found that thrust bearings are a little more difficult to assemble properly. What happens is the balls are prone to not sitting in the race in the opposite half of the bearing. The symptom is as above.

The way round this is to use the grease to hold it all together as you assemble it. The giveaway if this is happening is it starts to feel notchy as you tighten up the spindle bolts. Sometimes giving the blade grip a good waggle is enough..Remember to give the grips a good pull each way to center the spindle before you tear it down unnecessarily.

A low a headspeed will also cause wobbles as does stiff or unlubed dampners. TBH it's highly unlikely to be the dampners if its an out of the box build. I reckon its the thrust races are not seated properly.

            • cheers Bob Brian.

What confused me is before when I went into idle 1 70% thats where the wobble was, so in escence I had increased the headspeed and the woddle had started.

I will check them there bearings.
              All the best

                • Tony, I have the same wobble at low head speed, Seems to be a common thing with the 500 mate.

When flicked into Idle-up 2 or anything above 80% throttle its as smooth as silk..

                  Keep her buzzing mate..

Is 80 durometer enough - I think 90 would be better?

                              • Thanks Ash..the Align packs held a good H/S very impressive for small packs!. The 3300 I assume is still running in and the 42 6S again is kicking butt opower wise..really seems to hold a good v . I'm looking forward to trying the 16T 5S 42 combo myself..

Yes the 42 in 6S is too heavy..The flight vids I have you can see the blades are fair flexing and it shudders a little as the model it trying to stop..going to the 3200 6S straight after is so much nicer.

I'm planning meeting up with Paul as the forecast actually looks decent for Sunday.(3rd time lucky) We should be able to run some back to back flights as there should be 3 x 500's present with Pinions and various packs to run through.

                                cheers Brian
