Brian, you are right to an extent.
Remember that dropping volts increases amps so you might not get that bigger an advantage on 3D perfromance. Also everything will run hotter due to the higher amps (ESC and motor).
However, I agree with your view that the 2200 setup is having to work a fair bit and in many respects a 6S 2500-3000 would suit better.

ashley, i mentioned this to mike only a couple of hours ago on the phone. he said he'll see what he can do re a 2500-2800ish pack in 6s guise, he was going to call them about this 6s harness to allows us to charge 3 packs at once for the 500 on the new charger and said would also mention this.

del, there are times i would fly in the cold but i'm afraid for a 500 in crimbo week isn't just cause enough. matt is at the field now though....brave man, we were meant to night fly...HA.

yeah, I had a chat earlier today with Mike as whilst 2200s are a great size for dual use (450 & 500) the machine can clearly carry larger packs with little degradation in perfromance (as shown by Trev's 4200 packs)

i have a 4200 pack en route to see for myself what it is like but i'm not sure what the chances are of a 2500 plus lipo from revo are at the moment, especially given these 2200's just came.

yeah, my concern is the 4200s are quite heavy AND approx 50% more cost on top of running 2200s. Even though Trev really likes them I'm not sure a pack of that weight and cost will turn peoples heads. I could be wrong but it's certainly not a cheap option.

Yep, the 4200's are my favourite pack for the Trex 500, I think the little extra weight that the packs offer is great for improving the characteristics of the machine .

i don't have the 4200 pack yet but the machine appears to be too heavy in the videos imo, but i will know more when i get the pack. a 2500-2800mah pack is the place it needs to be for me long term. that said the 4200 would be a great pack on a 12t pinion probably and get 10 mins ish from it for general flying.
