  • CGY750 with Spektrum Rx

I am currently setting up my first flybarless heli and have plumped for the Futaba CGY750 flybarless controller which is hopefully on it's way to me now. I shortlisted this one against a full size Vbar and basically made a final decision based on the Futaba being slightly more suitable for nitro helis, which is what it's going on. Also, my friend has a couple and they seem to work very well.

However, unlike my friend, I use a JR DSX9 transmitter with Spektrum 7 channel receivers for my helis, so I have an inherent problem - no S-Bus. But, good old Futaba make a conversion box which takes a 'normal' Rx output signal and outputs it to a single-wire S-Bus signal which the GY750 can understand. So, I've purchased on of these as well.

It's pretty small but got lots of wires hanging out of it. It's about the size of a pair of AAA batteries side by side, but without the weight.

I haven't heard any talk of this flybarless setup on here, so I'm kinda in the dark on this one, but the whole flybarless thing is starting to make sense to me now, so the fog is steadily clearing.

I've found a good set of videos on Youtube on just this topic. Haven't watched them all yet, just the first one, but it seemed pretty simple.

Watch this space. Anyone else tried this setup?

Yep. I've setup my mates CGY-750 with the SBE-1 S-Bus encoder. It was a doddle to do. He uses a JR 11X and it was very easy to install and setup.

My mate is over the moon with it!!!

Did you do this with a 7 channel receiver?

No. I'm sure it was a 9 channel JR receiver. But I'll ring mate later and check with him.

You could buy a clone spektrum RX, HobbyKing R/C Hobby Store : OrangeRx R910 Spektrum DSM2 9Ch 2.4Ghz TwinPort Rxhen you dont have the faf of the encoder.

              So far, so good.

I've got the fbl unit installed with the S-Bus converter. Also upgraded the CGY750 firmware to the latest v1.2 and got all my servo centres sorted with spot-on push rod angles, flat swash plate and zero degrees collective pitch. Also got the governor sensor in and reading 96% on the detection, so happy days there too.

With the servo end points as they are at 100% all round, I've got +/- 13.5 degrees collective pitch and about 9 degrees cyclic pitch. These values will be reduced in the CGY750 menus in good time, but for now at least, I've got plenty of mechanical throws.

So next to setup all the rest of the stuff in the 750, of which there's quite a bit to look at, and finally to add half a ton of lead to the front end to get the c/g right, then should be somewhere near a first test flight.

You may need to lower the I and D gains from the default settings. I did on my 600E Pro and 700N's.

Well today it flew for the first time.

                    It just worked.

No dramas, no problems, just great fun.

I had 2 flights and now need to check everything over on the airframe and see how much was drawn out of the LiPo pack. I can see straight away how the extra power is released from the engine with fbl. I set the maximum collective pitch to exactly the same as my other flybarred Xcell 90s with the same engine, and it climbed like a rocket at 1750 head speed, faster than my other two at 1950 head speed.

It flew every bit as well as I need it to do even at 1750, so may well tweak the head speed up a bit soon, but right now, I don't see any need to go mental with it.

There's a bit of a mechanical whine from the gear train somewhere, maybe in the tail or tube, so I need to sort that out, but it didn't stop me having a couple of tentative flights and proving my home-made head and first fbl setup works just fine.

Hope to have some photos later when I get them from our club photographer.

                    Happy daze.

Sorry Steve. Only just seen your post.

You may need to reduce your I and D gains in Ail and Ele Expert menus. See my post:- http://www.rcheliaddict.co.uk/futaba...tml#post832174
