The pinion is the small metal drive gear that fits on the motor which drives the larger plastic main gear giving the required headspeed to the blades.

Depending on battery size / power thus requires the correct pairing of teeth on the gears.

By using this headspeed calculator you can work out the required headspeed for your model.

If I went for 5s would that limit my use with other helis? Could I use them in my Align Trex 500 for instance?

Don't think so as most Trex 500's run 6S & will be setup & geared for 6S if that's what you use now.

I run my logo on 12S & use 3300mah currently on it although planning to invest in some Opti 3500's

Bought the 6s in the end. Made more economic sense with having a Trex 500. Only hovering anyway!
