Running cost is way more important than purchase cost really. Assuming you are aiming to go electric, 550 or 600 size batteries are a lot more and, electric or not, blades will break and cost; ironically most other bits like booms aren't a lot more 600 sized - but frames certainly can be! However, assuming you have somewhere safe to fly (i.e. not a park or local bit of waste ground) every thing does happen slower and more predictably with a 550 or 600 than a 450 or 500 and, of course wind is a lot less of a problem. I often have my first flight with my 450 and then the 550 seems easy. If cost is an issue even a 500 will seem a good jump in performance/ability to handle the weather and, personnally, with the sort of energy in a 600 I wouldn't be able to bring myself to feel safe flying a HK600.

To be honest I only want to spend a few hundred as I'm in the middle of building a quadcopter and with being a newbie to this I've been trying to build my fleet, I've heard bigger is better, I wish I could spend a bit more but the wife might divorce me with what I've spent already. So I really need to keep cost down.
