  • Hand Warmer Review

I have just bought through Ebay a couple of hand warmers, the metal fuel driven kind and ive just lit one for the first time and was quite impressed with the result, so thought I would share.

Ive tried all sorts either in doing this hobby or in my younger days golf. Ive personally found that the gel packs are complete rubbish, once activated if out on a very cold day they usually solidify in no time at all. Other ones ive tried are the ones with the charcoal rod, these I think once you get the charcoal to light are fantastic if you can keep them burning, trouble is they go out very easily, I usually have 2 at a time and general at least one fails on me. So I thought I would give them a try.

The metal warmer comes with a cover, which you will need, and a measuring bottle, I bought 2 of the warmers for £20 plus the tin of lighter fuel was I think £1.59.

I thought I would try it out prior to going to the field incase it proved to be rubbish. Unfortunately there were no instructions but their not that hard to figure out. take the top off and pour in the fuel and set light, seams simple enough.

I also soaked the wadding so it would light, when I lit it a flame came up and I thoughthis is not good but it soon burnt off the excess fuel and went down to nothing, my fault for putting the fuel on the wadding, anyway I used the measure cup and went for the lower lever 10ml now from a 133ml tin this is obviously 13 refills at this level which I though ok thats fairly cheap. thinking to 10ml would burn for around an hour or so.

I lit it this morning at 6.30 it finally died at just before 11.00 41/2 hour, which I was amazed at, remembering though that this was indoors, so may well be different in the field.

I also noted that the cover will definitely be needed as the metal at times gets so hot you cannot hold it comfortably. saying this I did notice through the trial the temperature did change, obviously as the fuel moved around.

in conclusion im quite please with how it went they were extremely easy to light and there was no sign of it going out, so happy about that.

I will be giving them a go at the field this weekend to see how they cope with the actual cold.

Looks like a clone of the Zippo hand warmer. I have the zippo version and it rocks, up to 12 hours on a full fill

Zippo copy is exactly what it is.

as you Know John the hands are the hardest thing to keep warm, just got fed up with those charcoal sticks going out on me.

I got a pair of Zippo ones for Christmas last year.

I find they stop working when they're in my pockets - they get starved of oxygen.

Work great in the open air or inside my Tx mitt.

Never found that with mine, and more often than not I have one in a shirt chest pocket under a fleece inside a coat.

Hmmm I don't get that problem with my Zipos. It stays in my pockets ( one on it's pocket....lol ) and they last 6 hours as I half fill them....... very very nice and warm hands

I just purchased a Zippo hand warmer and it's ok - but like the Zippo lighters it evaporates far too quick and the hand warmer takes a lot of juice... But yes they do work well and for a long time, I use mine in a pocket and it just gets warmer than with just leaving it open air.

Also bit of a pain to light them I think..

If any one thinks of a good cap to stop the evaporation I think that would be a good idea.

Still better than anything else on the market I feel and good for warming up your hands .

i got some of these :

Gelert Hot Pod Handwarmer - Heat Packs - Twin Packs | eBay

they work great and when i tuck them inside my fingerless gloves they keep my hands nice & toasty and a twin pack lasts a whole flying session....... only disadvantage is that they are not cheap and not reusable.

I had a zippo one. First use was great. Latested ages, ever since wont light properly and makes your pockets stink of lighter fuel.

Good review Tony, wish you'd done this 3 weeks ago...
                          I bought 2 charcoal hand warmers(2x£8) & 4 packs of charcoal(4x£4), total of £32,
feel like I've been done, no actually they done the job, I light them both ends on one of those cheap camping gas cookers,
                          No probs .. Toasty hands..
Has anyone tried the heater thingy that runs of li-po's from hobby king?
see link, I would like an opinion on this, as I was thinking on buying one to go in Tx Mit

The other way is light them in the middle, your blow torch does the job of lighting them very well, they do not go out after a good burst of that, just found my other 2 so I will have 4 on the go now................

Several guys at our club have them and have mounted them inside the Turnigy TX mits and
this seems to work really well. I just got one mysef and it does heat up straight away
and I'm sure it can keep a TX mit toasty warm. I still need to mount mine inside the mit
and fit a Deans connector on it etc.

What I have used before are the chemical hand warmers from places like Mountain Warehouse.
They stay warm for 7 or 8 hours, they're very light and compact but they are not re-usable.
