I have just bought through Ebay a couple of hand warmers, the metal fuel driven kind and ive just lit one for the first time and was quite impressed with the result, so thought I would share.
Ive tried all sorts either in doing this hobby or in my younger days golf. Ive personally found that the gel packs are complete rubbish, once activated if out on a very cold day they usually solidify in no time at all. Other ones ive tried are the ones with the charcoal rod, these I think once you get the charcoal to light are fantastic if you can keep them burning, trouble is they go out very easily, I usually have 2 at a time and general at least one fails on me. So I thought I would give them a try.
The metal warmer comes with a cover, which you will need, and a measuring bottle, I bought 2 of the warmers for £20 plus the tin of lighter fuel was I think £1.59.
I thought I would try it out prior to going to the field incase it proved to be rubbish. Unfortunately there were no instructions but their not that hard to figure out. take the top off and pour in the fuel and set light, seams simple enough.
I also soaked the wadding so it would light, when I lit it a flame came up and I thoughthis is not good but it soon burnt off the excess fuel and went down to nothing, my fault for putting the fuel on the wadding, anyway I used the measure cup and went for the lower lever 10ml now from a 133ml tin this is obviously 13 refills at this level which I though ok thats fairly cheap. thinking to 10ml would burn for around an hour or so.
I lit it this morning at 6.30 it finally died at just before 11.00 41/2 hour, which I was amazed at, remembering though that this was indoors, so may well be different in the field.
I also noted that the cover will definitely be needed as the metal at times gets so hot you cannot hold it comfortably. saying this I did notice through the trial the temperature did change, obviously as the fuel moved around.
in conclusion im quite please with how it went they were extremely easy to light and there was no sign of it going out, so happy about that.
I will be giving them a go at the field this weekend to see how they cope with the actual cold.
