  • GY601 setup... help!

Trying to set up the GY601 in my T-Rex 600E.

I know about the magic gain figure on the gyro display of 37%, but when I adjust the GY gyro gain settings in the transmitter (FF9C) to the recommended values (70% Normal, 40% for idle-ups) the gain figure on the gyro display then changes to an even smaller value.

Also, struggling to get the limit settings to around the recommended 110%. Even with the ball link moved real close in on the servo horn, the linkage is still binding up.

Anyone out there (Ade?) able to help me on this one? If you PM me your phone number, I could call you back in order to help talk me through it? Have the heli on the computer bench right here

    Cheers - Rob

I think I have it sorted. Very short arm from servo, tune the throws down a bit with the end points, then up the limits on the gyro to 110% each way.

I find now my end points (in the radio) are something like 46 one way, 57 the other, so not quite centred mechanically but probably flyable.

Once I shift my cold, I'll go for it.

dude..leave ya endpionts on your rubber 100%..in tranny.
and use the gyro to limt the movement.

let the gyro have full control...over the settings.

only use your TX to adjust the gain in the modes.

        Hi Steve

If I leave the endpoints at 100% each side on the radio, I have limits on the gyro of about 40% each direction. It's recommended to have over 110% for the servo's benefit.

        Or am I missing something?

Is it just the 600E has a short tail rotor blade pitch 'throw' compared to other helis?

        Cheers - Rob

not saying you have but re-cheak you tail build...seems very low man..make shure your blade grips are the correct way around ,,ive done it many a time.

you should have way more room than that man.
          then re-check tail rods??

              1. Set the gain on the gyro screen by adjusting the limits on your gyro switch.

              2. Set the servo travel limits on the gyro to between 110 and 120% in both directions (any less than this can cause premature failure of the tail servo).

              3. If necessary, adjust the output position of the ball on the servo arm so that the tail operates without binding at the extremes with these end point settings.

              4. Set the gyro to F3C or 3D mode. F3C mode is harder on your servo as it makes the stops slightly sharper (i.e. when you let go of the stick after a piro), but 3D mode gives you a more consistent rate of rotation, say if you do travelling piros for example.

              5. Test fly and adjust the end points on the rudder channel of your Tx - this only affects the rate of rotation (i.e. how fast it piros) and nothing else, so all the previously set up parameters will still remain in place.

If I could find the website I would give you a link - maybe someone else knows it - the one where Jason Krauss gives step-by-step instructions on how to set up a 601 or 611 gyro. If my memory serves my corectly, then mt steps above should be it.

Hi there - yes I've seen the Jason Krause bit on his website, but it's still a little too concise for me - I think there is a fundamental step I'm missing/not understanding.

The main issue I had is that 'as built', when I operated the rudder originally from the radio, the pushrod buckled end to end badly - ie. far too much servo movement, even on the minimum hole on the servo horn. I couldn't find a way to limit the servo movement from the gyro; the only way I seemed to be able to lessen the movement was by moving the channel 4 end points down on the radio.

I'll have another read of the gyro manual and see if there is a parameter I can adjust for servo movement, whilst keeping the gyro unit 'Limit' parameter at 110% or greater.

                Cheers - Rob

Doing this doesn't effect how far the servo travels.

It only affects how quickly it gets to the end point.

The limit of servo travel is set on the gyro amp alone (that's the one that should be between 110 and 120%).

...but if I hold full right (say) rudder, bind the pushrod up, then lessen the end point on the radio, the pushrod un-binds itself.

If I have 100%/100% travel on channel 4, even on minimum servo horn setting, if I use the gyro limit settings to bring the rudder servo movements into check I end up with gyro screen limit settings of something like 35% each way... nowhere near the recommended 110%.

I think I/you/we are close to solving this...

When you push the rudder stick on the bench, you are asking the gyro to rotate the model, but becuse it's on the table and not moving, the gyro keeps pushing the servo over in an attempt to make it move, thereby setting up an unsolvable equation - you say turn the model with the rudder stick, the gyro tells the servo to turn the model, but the model isn't turning at all - it's just sitting there in front of you on the table.

You should be doing all your tail servo setting-up in normal mode, not heading hold. In normal mode, the tail servo will follow the Tx stick precisely, so when you push the stick to the limit, the servo will travel to its limit with the stick, and will centre when the stick is in the centre.

If you already know all this, then please accept my apologies, but your settings do seem odd. I could pop by Warboys on my way home from work tomorrow eveing if you like and have a look. It's not far off my route to and from my office.

Yes, I'm in Normal mode... but thanks for the suggestion. I did find out earlier in my exploits that in HH mode the servo keeps adding movement.

If you did want to call by, that would be good... I'll be in - don't think I'll be at work tomorrow due to a stinking cold

How well do you know Warboys? If you were on the road through Warboys leading to Ramsey (B1040) we're on the last road on your left before the de-restricted 60mph signs as if you were leaving Warboys, about 80yds down on your left - No. 13, cream coloured house with long gravel driveway, Blue Saab 9000 on it, and black garage doors.

If you want the actual address, I'll PM you!

on the radio the rudder end points controls the pirorette rate and shouldnt affect the gyro's limits.
you are using the smallest servo wheel that came with the servo.

does seam odd you have such small gyro limits.

can you post a photo of your tail?
