Does this apply to any seller in the UK...eg private individual...or only to a "trade sale"..?.

im pretty sure its only from a company (trader) but then you could say thats anybody on ebay etc
on my service you get upto $100 as std insurance you can also pay for extra insurance liability but my service is 3rd party so i think going on what andy said this is slightly diffrent

I guess it's worthwhile saying that this aspect of the SOG applies to traders rather than private individuals but I'd be inclined to suggest it as best practice if sending anything of value to make sure it's adequately insured, should you choose to share the cost of this with the buyer then so be it.

Well, you paid for a service which you didn't get. Provided it was through a trader then go and state your case and your disappointment. If it was eBay then negative feedback is a good bargaining tool too.

I was tempted to say it hadnt arrived to teach them a lesson..I was going to phone them and say...it hasnt arrived but, it shouldnt be a problem, as I paid for recoded and signed for delivery.

It only cost me about £1.30 extra but, if they do that with every order they are cashing in big time on postage charges

If you sell goods or services to consumers by:

                  the internet
                  digital television
                  mail order, including catalogue shopping
                  phone
                  fax
then you need to know about the Consumer Protection (Distance Selling) Regulations 2000.

The key features of the regulations are:

you must give consumers clear information including details of the goods or services offered, delivery arrangements and payment, the supplier's details and the consumer's cancellation right before they buy (known as prior information)
you must also provide this information in writing
the consumer has a cooling-off period of seven working days.

I run a small retail/mail order business and yes it is my reasonability as the seller to get goods to the customer. Trading Standards stomped all over me last year and I was given a clean bill of health. He was more intrested in my website than the shop. Part of my business insurance covers goods in transit with a 3rd party. I still decide order by order what service is best. My default carrier insures all goods to £500 and is only £4.95. I don’t charge postage on my site. Sorry don’t sell Heli stuff Well not yet

Unfortunately postage is something we need to get used to paying, and more of it. RM is relatively cheap to post but as we all know has it’s issues. It’s harder for small retailers such as FL, Midlands etc as they find it difficult to get brilliant deals with carriers as the volume might not be there. I know businesses paying £3 for a carrier, but they ship over 50 items a day.

What confuses me is that people are happy to pay postage when buying on eBay but moan like hell when buying from a private website! WTF!!!

If oil prices continue to rise it’s all going to get more expensive.

I don't agree with charging for SD and using Std mail.

On eBay everyone has got used to comparing the total price including shipping due to the way people reduce the price then increase the shipping so in reality people never really look at the price for the item alone.

Pretty much everywhere else you don't get to consider the shipping until the order is being placed so it always feels like an 'extra'.

I recently sold my Srimok and elected to use Millermans service, parcel is being collected today with insured delivery value. Must say the communication so far with him has been excellent and will certainly use for future deliveries. It's also nice to think i'm not lining royal mails pockets after they stiffed me on a gyro i sold recently.
