  • Who else don't like sims.

Have had another go on the sim tonight, and just don't get on with it.
Am using clearveiw and it seems on par with phoenix. apart from graphics are slightly better. does anyone else find them useless or is it just me, maybe i am just to old for computer games, lol

Wouldn't say I don't like them, just can't be bothered with 'em. Had one for years and have only ever used it a small handful of times, and certainly not once this year. I lack the discipline to use it as a learning tool. Odd that though, as I'm pretty disciplined in everything else I do in my life.

I think part of the problem is that the perception of space is all wrong - you're staring at a relatively small 2D screen compared with the large 3D patch of sky that you are presented with at the field, and if the heli gets any more than about 10 feet away on the sim then it becomes so small that you can't see it any more, which is not the case in real life.

I know they can be good and have seen some outstanding results from one of our club members who basically learnt to fly on Pheonix before ever actually building his first heli, so they obviously work for some/lots of people.

I think you need to remember that a sim is a tool, not a game. It is not supposed to offer the same pleasure you get from proper flight. Use it to practice specific things and new moves. It is invaluable for that unless the part of the hobby you enjoy most is doing repairs.

When you want to learn something new, practice for 15 minutes every night and don't just fly the way you usually do. This will help you learn the stick movements (we learn best after sleeping on it) and the short but regular sessions will pay off. Try to avoid crashing. It is easy to let the sim model keep crashing but treat the simulated flight as you would a real flight.

Simulators shine as development tools, just mucking about on it to see what you can do gets boring pretty fast. If you want to progress, a good sim is the best investment you can make. And Phoenix is a way better simulator than clear view, it is not just the graphics.

You need to try real flight on a 3d monitor, this was my complaint until I used a 3D sim, much more realistic

not for me, just never seemed to connect with a sim they are all "ideal" conditions and unrealistic in my opinion. Also feels like slow motion.

i will stick to beaters and real flying way up high.

I find the sim very usefull, especially now im using it at a learning tool and not just a quick flying fix for when i cant get out flying.
recently ive learnt things i thought were out of reach and its brought my real flying on loads

I think a sim makes this hobby quite interesting unlike model car racing I can practice a new move (like Frog said) go to the field and pull it of. I find the sim is KEY! But yes it can get boring but 15 min practice of a set move a day isn't a lot and the rewards are great :-)
                    Happy siming

A lot depends how important it is to you to progress your flying. If it isn't important you don't need a sim.

Personally I couldn't possibly do without the sim. Sometimes I find it very hard to get motivated to use it, but if nothing else you can develop all you natural responses without risking your model or costing in fuel.

I think they can be very useful for learning but I struggle to stay focused for any longer than about 10 minutes on it, works for many but not for me.....

                          >> "ideal" conditions
we can fix this easily... Simply offset the trims to the limit and re-learn repeated stall turns along the flight line, where you want them, not where the heli wants to go.

Think that's the view I would agree with, fun for a short time but a tad too easy and gets boring after a short while

I did however practice certain Nose In moves before trying on my heli

everyone is different and everyone learns at different rates, what works for one may not work for another.

the sim is like masturbation and the real deal is the sex !
