  • Work Sucks !!

Ok this is kinda a rant, But wondering how many others are in the same boat!

getting fed up with working now. Considering getting a job in a supermarket just to get my life back!

Im a multi skilled engineer for a in the FMG sector for a multinational food manuf.
My job i like. Its the hours that suck.

    I do 2 days, 2 nights , then supposed 4 off.
Now the thing is, after the first 2 days, I still wake in the am (usually about 7am) Go to work that night, So im awake for over 24 hrs before I see my bed again. Then I sleep all day, get up go to work, come home at 7 am and thats the start of my 4 days off. But guess what - I JUST WORKED ALL NIGHT. I HAVE TO SLEEP. How the hell can that be a day off . Then if i sleep to much, I cant sleep that night .
So it takes me 2 days to get right, then it starts again .

The other thing is, I cant really join clubs as i would only get to go every 7 or so weeks, Work 5/6 weekends out of 8. End up working most bank holidays. Cant book holiday off in December, so usually end up back in work on boxing day. And get 20 days holiday a year.
Ive doine this for nearly 5 years now, Before that did 4 on 4off for 5 years for the same co.

Im glad to have a job etc (The pay is ok- But not stunning).
But really starting to wonder if its worth it. Its now starting to affect my health, and my mood sometimes leaves a little to be desired .

Anyone else do these hours... Or worse - Just to make me feel better

EDIT: Didnt mention that they are 12 hr shifts...............

To make you feel better You still have a job

If its affecting your health then maybe you should speak to your employers as they do have a responsibility if its work causing the health problems

Thing is, Last guy who did that was told, "Sorry, thats the shift pattern. If you are unable to do that then you should find a job more suited to you" !

And mattydred,, Indeed you are right... But sometimes you stop and wonder where the last couple of years has gone....

I used to work 3X8 shifts which was not too bad and gave me time to fly in the day when working nights ... the 2-10pm shift was always the worst for me ... I have been put in charge of another dept at work and now work 8-4pm which is even better ...

That shift pattern must be a killer. Rather you than me.

I'd bet that, if you did a little bit of research you would find all kinds of physiological reasons why that pattern is far from ideal for anyone.

I won't bore you with such stuff as windows of circadian low but I bet you'd fit into that and, were there ever to be an issue whereby someone got hurt or killed, you could take them to the cleaners...

At 3 in the morning on your first night, You really REALLY double check and even then .... 415v 3 ph and Highspeed packing machinery mmmm lush.... Ok and then theres the "HOW LONG IS THAT GOING TO TAKE.. LORRY WAITING"

There are 2 of us on, and after 12pm tend to go round together to keep an eye on each other... Althogh thats frowned upon.

Thing is, A lorry driver is only allowed to drive for 8 hrs.
This is the same kind of thing,,, and then theres driving home in the morning after being awake for 25 hrs + and having had a hard 12 hr shift, with 1 hr break(just)... always interesting.... but no law against it.
Wonder how many early morning car accidents are caused by night workers driving home. Some of the guys i work with have to stop for a kip half way home !

This is what increased efficiency means. for thos of us who work in real companies.
If you want good pay for less hours you have to get a pretend job in the public sector, but they are not recruiting at the moment!

                        Hey,

who said life was easy !!!

I feel your pain, im also in the same boat, I also work days, nights and weekend and the only guaranteed day off is Christmas day !! all 12hr shifts.

All I know that it feeds, clothes and houses the family , and some time have a little left for me.

To much work and not enough play, but thats life !!

You need to look at the positives and don’t focus on the negatives, else it will get you down.

I can only get down the field for a few hours a month, but I take that as a positive.

I have a job, family and health. and trying to juggle them all.

                        Think positive !!!!

I am, I must admit, more fortunate than many. I work 9 til 5, Monday to Friday.

Only had three "out of hours" calls in 8 years and even those were just non-urgent calls that were just asking me to do something when next in the office.

I do question the word "efficiency" though. On a 12 hour harsh shift pattern, I doubt if individuals achieve much more than 8 hours of work.

Mate.. at least you have a job.. I got made redundant last month (not all bad though as I fancied a change, even with the great pay!)

What i've learnt is, that in my case.. money is not the be all and end all.. happiness was worth more than the stupid amount of money I was being paid for doing nothing. But in your case, pay is ok but not great but on the other hand its having a big mental effect on you.. and health and happiness is the main thing in my books.. I think its time to move on but thats my 2p
