    I work 7am-3pm or 2pm - 10pm....

But its over 7 days so I work every other weekend so I miss a lot of heli events, but the flip side is I can go flying in the week and have the whole day doing nothing...

although looking out the window today is a work day and the last of the summer is outside today and maybe Wednesday, it's going to turn colder by the weekend

try a bright light lamp. Here in Finland it's a rather common problem, even if our long days or nights are much less severe than your work schedule.
You can use the bright light to trick your body into adjusting its clock. Advancing it is easier than delaying, or so I've been told.
I think this is a bit similar to jet lag, a problem that unfortunately gets only worse as we get older.

Simon, I can fully sympathise with how you feel working these hours due to having done shift work previously for 11 years covering 24/7 x 365.

Having worked both 8 hour shifts Monday to Friday with 12 hour shifts on weekends and also 12 hour shifts covering all seven days I can confirm both have advantages along with disadvantages. Either way the drive home after that first night shift is never a pleasure especially during the winter months. The trick that helped me through the years was getting just the right amount of sleep at the right time. Before doing your first night shift have a late night and make sure you don’t get up early in the morning. Also if you can get an hours nap before you start the shift will help. A day off that’s spent asleep is just a wasted day. Only have 3 to 4 hours sleep after the nights, then do something that’s active. Personally I would ride my bike or go to the gym; a raised heart rate will create endorphins that make you feel good.

Simon that work pattern really sucks!

I've had jobs previously that didn't suit me shall we say, but I guess I'm very fortunate now to have a job I really enjoy and work only Mon - Friday.

I think the very best part of my job has been the times when I've been able to take on new people and offer them a position in my small team with a starting salary that isn't too bad especially as most of them were out of work at the time!

Hope you get something sorted soon mate as we only have one go at this life and you've got to try to make the most of it

As several people have said, try to look for the positives and make the most of them.

I've done worse shift patterns than that, try 2x12hr day shifts (7am-7pm), followed by a 12hr change over to go on to 2x12hr night shifts (7pm-7am) then only two days off before doing it all over again, that also means its a 6 day pattern so you couldn't really plan anything, never having the same day (wont call it two) off every week

I think there needs to be some drastic changes to the law about such patterns and night work, I'm sure its doing thousands of people great harm, in an age where the government seems to want to tackle public health problems, this seems to be one area they dont want to touch.

Political Correctness is a doctrine fostered by a delusional, illogical, liberal minority, and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end.

I've worked shift work for the last 15yrs! I think I'm used to it now! Week of days/Week of Nights 0730-1700 mon-friday/1630-0400 Mon-Thurs(later is the norm depending on aircraft availability). Most weekends off, unless we're deployed in the sandy places, then its normally 3 months at a time with maybe, maybe 1 day off a month.

I usually find the first nightshift is the easiest! It all goes downhill from there. Having a sick wife and two noisy s tends to be counter productive in the sleep department as I have to take them to school/childminder, then try and sleep during the day, I normally just grin and bear it and recover over the weekend and back to work monday morning - repeat ad nauseum.

Its been said before, look to the positives. There are thousands out there who would love a job to complain about!
