  • Ouch- that was a bit hard........

It was a wonderful fly, sunshine, light breeze, confidence increasing, some lovely fast 8s with the heli on its side, so I decide to go for my first real proper high stall turns.

It was brilliant, had the heli vertical and stopped, lovely pull outs, great noises, so I decided to go a bit higher and see how far I could drop before pulling out...............

I dopped too far, was unable to pull out and bam- it was like a helicopter explosion as it piled into the ground, bits flying everywhere and the poor heli wimpering and wining on the ground like a wounded animal- the poor tail servo still thought it had a job to do and was whirring away still.

It's that fine line between pushing things and going a bit far- we live and learn I suppose.

It's strange, but I reckon you can feel the time when things are about to start messing up and the hard part is to stop at that point and go back to some easy stuff.

Ah well- it gives me the excuse to buy a couple of beers and spend an evening tinkering.

    What a brilliant hobby

Sorry about your crash mate but at least it occured because you were trying something new and pushing yourself rather than a simple dumb thumb moment. Great work on the stall turns btw thats what im hoping to try next when I find the bottle and am feeling comfortable with the heli

Now i guess the question is - is it the thought that things are going to go wrong that is the cause of the crash or is the impending crash the reason for feeling that things are going to go wrong

interesting question- I go flying on my own and tend to fly one battery after another and I can feel myself getting more twitchy by about the end of the 3rd battery. I think I may need to do one battery warm up, 2 progression batteries, then back to simple stuff.

So much of this is about confidence and not thinking too hard when you are flying.

Sorry about your crash Alex - nice attitude about it though I hope you get her back in the air soon.

I agree with you about the 1 battery warm up - two progression and end with one more to "wind down" - my problem is that I haven't managed to get to the last part yet as my "progression" seems to end up in the dirt!! Ho hum what fun.

        Cheers

I read somewhere about flying over long grass to reduce crash damage- I find mud has been better recently.

I think it may be pushing good will a bit far to ask the bloke who owns the field I fly in to let his lovely mown grass get long as well as letting me fly there :P

All the best Alex and the next time you fly and your coming down after the stall, pull the elevator down and live to crash, pushing (or pulling) another personal boundary!!

Aaaahh... I really feel at home with all you people here more than anywhere else in the world!

              Cheers mate... keep us posted.

It'll be difficult while on your own, but another way to fly is to have breaks between flights. At a club, the time is taken up with chatting & forms a 'natural' break in the flying.

The reasoning is that it's an awful lot of concentration to fly X4 batteries or tank fulls on the trot. It's this extra concentration that may make you tired before your 3rd battery & actually cause problems in the focus needed not to crash.

Just my view but another point to think about.

Sounds like your having fun though & that's what it's all about.

Agreed Zoom- I think it needs some breaks to get the focus back.
