  • Windows 7 help

Just changed to clean install of Windows 7 ultimate 64 bit on a new hard drive.

Struggling to find my way around with respect to e-mail and Internet settings.

I've found there is no e-mail client (was using Outlook Express) so cant migrate my contacts.

I have my previous Windows XP drive as a slave. Its only bootable if I re- cable internally but have limited access to files and hoped I could transfer files across or via memory card.

I have the wab.file from XP but cant import into W7. I even changed it to a .csv as W7 requires this format. I have it on the desktop on the W7 drive.

I also have my Favourites sitting but haven't a clue where/how to import into W7

Another Question..Both drives are bootable. Is it possible to use them alternatively meantime? If so what settings do I apply to my Bios? Both drives will I assume be called C Drive will that be a problem?

Once I'm done I will wipe the XP one for storage but would like to be able to copy Vid files etc across to W7 drive meantime

Ok am I better to add a e-mail program to replace Outlook? Not over keen on Windows Live/MSN whatever it is

    Questions Questions..Help

You can use Windows Live Mail which is a "download and install" package. Click here to download page. Is this the one you don't like? It is a programme you don't have to be constantly on-line for as you do with hotmail and the likes.

With regards to using the win 7 as boot, press the orb (bottom left of screen) and write msconfig, the second tab will say boot, click that and you can set the default OS to boot from.

For internet and an email client I use:
      Email client = Thunderbird http://en-gb.www.mozillamessaging.co...B/thunderbird/
      Internet client = Firefox http://www.mozilla-europe.org/en/firefox/

For firefox use this plugin, it will remove all ads from any/all sites it will also enhance your browsing.: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1865

They both after installation give you the option to import, extremely easy to use.

        Re: Windows 7 help

Windows live is so much like outlook express you won't know the difference Brian.

I use it and it's great.

          Hi There,

With respects to email, install Windows Live Mail (Better then Outlook imo), and you should be able to import the outlook file i think,

With regards to your hard drive if you have them both hooked up (Assuming PATA/IDE) you should have 1 HDD as Master and the other Slave, Or Both on CS (cable select).

Windows 7 Should have seen this during the install and installed the bootloader which allows you to select which Windows to boot, But if not, you can always go into the BIOS and change which harddrive to boot first, or alternatively press a one of the F Buttons that prompts you the boot menu at computer start up, or you can always go ahead and configure the bootloader in Windows 7 to see these two drives.

Both drives being named C: will not be a problem!

Depending on what browser your using (ile explain firefox method) boot into your Windows XP drive, launch up firefox go to bookmarks, then organise bookmarks, click the import/backup bookmarks button, Save them em to your memory stick, boot back into windows 7 and then re-do the procedure but this time import em

          Hope this help a little

If both drives are plugged into the motherboard, then within the bios you will need to change the boot order of the drives. First identify which drive has which OS on it, i would guess that they are different sizes, so that should not be a problem.

In most bios menus, there will be an area where you can change the boot order of devices, ie, Which order your CD Drive, Floppy and Hard drive boot. You should have a sub menu from there which will allow you to change the order in which hard drives boot. Depending which one you want to boot first, just make sure that its at the top of the list. Save the settings and reboot. You normally use +/- Page up/down to move the order of the drives.

Sounds a bit daunting, but take your time, and do one step at a time. If at any point you think you might have made a mistake, exit out of bios without saving settings, that way you will not make any changes and it will be back to the way it was before.

Because there are so many different types of bios and how the menus are laid out, its pretty difficult to talk you through it step by step accurately.

Right guys have windows live running as I have a Hotmail address. Got the e-mail addresses imported so we are moving forward at least.

Now it asks for each address (mostly non hotmail addresses) to Add To Your Network????

If you select yes it wants to add them to Messenger/MSN and send them an invite ?

Other one...I have 3 e-mails currently one being Hotmail the others are a Tiscali/O2 All working.

Thing is there is no send receive button + think I have to check each address individually for mail instead of all in one go?

Some good info about booting up from the drives will try that ASAP.

Sometimes just sometimes I realise why I put up with all the Micro$oft luvvers telling me how much better Windoze is than OSX. What a freaking palaver, you are most welcome to it

                      Thanks.
                      It was pure quality

Does my head in that you all tell us Mac users how fantastic Windoze is compared to our choice and then some guy wants to do something dead simple and has to jump through hoops to get where he wants to be

You are all quick to jump down our throats and tell us how it is but up until the last few years most of you hadn't even actually seen a Mac in real life let alone used one and most still have no hands on experience at all. On the flip side most Mac users have used both for years

Why is everything about Windoze so convoluted and user unfriendly apart from keeping the certificated IT PC Support guys in employment?

As I've said before you pay your money and take your choice but...

TBH I've found my way round windows reasonably easily 95 till XP.

W7 is well err, just different

Cant find that sync button anywhere Tim. LOL

I've got 4 out of 5 email addresses working OK but my main one goes back to lineone.net. Which moved to tiscali now Talk Talk

Its still currently working from my XP drive but W7 is not finding it.
On saying that I dumped Tiscali/Talk talk 4 months back. Just have to play some more
