  • Mid-Air Collision

    Hi Guys

A dear friend of mine who flies planks (yeah I know - but somebody has to, right? ) emailed me a few days ago having had a mid-air with a heli.

He was in a situation where he was forced to land just over the brow of a hill at his flying site. The heli he struck (a TREX is all he said) was in the hover and he hit it full on.

Being the kind of guy he is my mate offered to pay for any and all repairs and the heli pilot has hit him with a bill for about £850! TILT!

He "thinks" it might have been a T-rex 500. If so, unless the heli was totally destroyed (i.e. nothing is salvageable), the bill seems a little steep to me?

    Your thoughts?

Tell your friend to get the dead heli and there are a myriad number of people on this forum that would fix it up for your friend at cost price!

£850 is a joke unless he's buying an entire new outfit!

The heli would have to be completely destroyed with no salvageable parts for that kind of bill to be valid!!!!

I guess if it turned out to be a Trex 700 it would be a different story!

Depends what he has fitted in it really. Base model at just over £300 with blades. Then add motor, esc, gyro, lipo (especially if using a big one which can cost a fair amount) etc it soon adds up.

Need to find out what he had in the heli to see if the price is about right.

Must be gutting having your heli smashed in front of you in a collision!

I think you need to have all the facts before you can ask that question.. You need to know what the heli was and a full list of damaged items..

Assuming it is a T500 then I think he might be taking the ****, you can buy a complete new 500 ESP combo kit for less than half that including all electrics which would probably still be OK on his heli.

I would want to see a list of what's needed and price it up myself.

I understand he may be upset but that's just way too much, I would have though £150 to £200 absolute tops and that would cover alot of damage..

I think you'd be hard pressed to do £850 quids worth of damage to a 500 unless you put it through a tree shredder.

Must of been a gold plated 500LE

Why is the planker at fault....we all know the risks.....it wasnt done on purpose

Was matey hovering on the flightline

This is why we fly helis on there own in our club

Thanks Guys. Pretty much my sentiments on the matter.

I've asked him for more details and I too said if it's a 700 the figures might be about right.

It does seem a little too much really. Surely everything can't have been destroyed.

Even to re-kit a 700 isnt that much.

As said, we all know the risks and imo it is more of a club issue if a heli can be in a hover on the flight line whilst a plank is also allowed to fly.

More "facts" are required before I would comment, let alone stump up that amount of money.

You'd get a nice bit of change from £850 even if you bought a 700LE including all the electronics. Surely this guy is having a laugh. And if it is in fact a TRex 500 then he really must be taking the ****.

No chance, sorry but thats a joke. Even for a 700 its way OTT. Was the plank made of metal with a stump shredder on the front??

I'm not even sure he should foot the bill. Clubs fault IMO for not providing a hovering area off the flightline

Martin did say the plank flyer was 'in a situation' so he may have strayed into a designated heli area, but anyway not enough info to comment really.

He needs to see the heli himself, confirm what it is and get a list of the damage. Can't really say any more at this stage.
