  • Lighting Charcoal Handwarmers

    Hi Guys

My kids bought me a charcoal hand warmer and some fuel rods for Christmas.

As I don't own a gas oven, what's the best way to light these things? My daughter thoughtfully bought me a Zippo lighter to light them - will this do the trick?

i use my gas soldering iron turns into a blowtorch when you take the ends off, a lighter will do it although it may take a little while

I use a plumbing Blowtorch, which I already had from DIY jobs.

Whatever you use, take it with you to the field, I have had them go out before.

2 sticks and plenty of patience

I have a small lighter powered blow torch which would be perfect to keep in the tool box, but then you would need a lighter to light this

I could do with one of those space heaters in my garage (if it wasn't so full of rubbish!) LOL

Light them in the morning with a lighter, get a shower and ready for the field, close the lid and put them in your pocket.

..by the time you get to the field they are up to a decent temperature

I do the same, use a gas lighter at home and by the time i hit the flight line they are nice and warm..

Otherwise you can invest in a jet flame lighter, think you can pick them up for about a fiver..

Thanks for the input guys. I've just returned from town with a can of Zippo fuel. I'll give it a go. Failing this, I too have a DIY blowtorch. That'd work and, to keep my daughter sweet, I could use the Zippo to light the blow torch.

I am glad this thread makes known the difficulty in lighting that type of handwarmer because I don't think it's practical for me.

There was another type of fuel burning one someone mentioned recently that might be easier to use.

So far I have recently tried the chemical (non reusable) type and they are quite amazing little things.

                          How much are they?
I've recently been thinking of purchasing something to warm my lipos with.
Especialy on the realy cold days weve been having lately.
It seems by the time the lipos have warmed sufficiently
to give their best performance it's time to land.

The ones I have are £6.99 for 5 pairs. They look like large teabags and the chemical inside heats up when it is exposed to oxygen, so you just open the package and take them out and in a few minutes they warm up and they stay warm for 7 hours or more. They are small and lightweight so they're easy to put different places, even inside gloves etc.

I can remember trev using a cool bag & reusable ones
in the past. Think it was the ones you pop in the microwave.
Must try & dig out his post on it.
