  • Tool suggestions

    Hi,
I'm on the lookout for a power tool.
I would like to take some of the grunt work out of building helicopters by using an appropriate power tool to get bolts driven in.
Ideally, I'd like to be able to use my Hudy hex driver tips in a tool (as they won't easily strip themselves or the bolt heads).

I have a normal power drill, but I suspect this might not be ideal for this task.

Some sort of small hand tool would be ideal IMO, but I don't really know what to look for, so I'm asking for suggestions from those who know more about the subject

    Cheers,
    Rob

I use a ratcheting screwdriver Rob ...or you could use one of these

      4.8V 600mAh Cordless Screwdriver : Cordless Screwdriver : Maplin

or a drill with torque and speed settings might be better ... I use a cordless one that fits my hex drivers in sometimes

I use a 4.8v cordless screwdriver (Performance Power 4.8V Screwdriver, 0000005230754) with some hex bits (Fast Lad Performance) - battery in mine will easily last 3 or 4 heli builds.

I'm not sure I'd go anywhere near my helis with a power tool (other than a starter). Cheesium don't take too kindly to such things.

Most of the Aligns, fair few Spektrum bits, bunch of Align & HiTec servos, OBE, VD & Bar.

think i'd rather spend the money on a cordless dremel or something mine comes in hand for removing rounded out bolts and cutting bolts to length

I have a dremel, but it doesn't have the fine power control you get with a power drill trigger, unless I'm doing it wrong

Martin, there's a lot of heli's other than Align out there
              LOL

I'm trying to avoid the repetition of twisting my forearm while using hex drivers (sheesh, that was hard to write without making Mike spit more coke ) - so I am looking for a good quality electric driver that can take good quality bits (and of course the good quality bits themselves!).

              Cheers,

Wouldn't it be very difficult to tighten bolts to just the right degree unless you had a tool with some kind of adjustable torque setting -which would probably end up being pretty big and awkward to use on a heli?

I thought the OP would be 'The only one in the village', and then I read further down and it was a threesome!

I didn't figure building heli's to be so strenuous on your muscles and in all seriousness isn't it a bit too easy to cross thread a screw or bolt without realising if your using a power tool?

you can start em off by hand then finish off by driver if you are that worried ... I tend to use my ratchet screwdriver more than n e thing else here ....

Try to get an electric screwdriver with a torque setting though,
That way you have no fear of stripping screws into plastic.

I got mine years ago & its not in production anymore.

                        Tim.

Yes, but that's not the plan
The plan is to drive the bolt in almost fully, then tighten up by hand.
I want to remove most of the manual "driving".

                          Cheers,

I'd suggest you look at Bosch IXO lithium screwdriver, its very small and neat, and not powerful enough to be a problem, when you release the button it locks so you can manually tighten more if required - I got one cheap in Asda a couple of years ago, and have used it loads.

Just noticed Argos have these for £19.99
