The Flight Tech 8A unit is very good indeed, but if you want to try something a little more compact and lighter in weight then take a look at the variable voltage unit from "Perfect Regulators" (I think Fast Lad stocks them).

The fail safe switch is built into the side of the Regulator and as long as you can mount it in a position where you can reach it, they're really reliable and easy to use. They also come with a deans connector to the Li-Po battery pack.

In a 50 size machine where weight is a major consideration, I dont think you can go wrong with this one.

    Cheers

      Gary,

I have one of these to try but went for the non adjustable voltage version with 6v to everything other than the rudder/gyro at 5v.

reason for this was Pinecone's review on helifreak. looked like you could only run 8v to the cyclic using a 3s pack and the voltage looke variable depending on load?

The Elyq regulator is very good, but the case is a bit sh&te and cracks easy. I had two of them in both my 700's. I have ditched separate regs now and gone JR HV servos and use the Spektrum AR7100 receiver with built in reg and run servos direct.... it's the future!

Voltage from the reg should only drop below its configured output if you draw more current that it can source (assuming the output voltage is lower than the input voltage less the drop out voltage, e.g. 8V - 0.9V drop out = 7.1V), if the output can fluctuate with normal operation then there is something wrong with the reg or the design of the unit... IMHO.

I've got two regulators - one Duralite 5.1V switched with a Flightpower 2S LiPo and it's worked faultlessly for 2.5 years now. Other is a Fromeco Arizona with 4800 mAh Peerless LiIon pack which has also has worked faultlessly for a year or so.

As has been said already, they all seem to work ok really, just some are maybe tidier or more compact than others.
