thought about this quite a few times now...

what you really need is a chainsaw helmet. recently bought a chainsaw and all associated safety gear. trousers that stop the chain, helmet, face gaurd, ear mufs, etc. the new 500 is probably as dangerous as the chainsaw

Common sense, and a healthy respect for a 2k+ rotor disk are probably the best defence against injuring yourself or even worse others.

I try to think of it (600 size and up) as not being far off a tail rotor of a full scale.

I've seen some people do crazy things with models over the years, eg being close enough to touch a 50 size and not even understanding the danger they are putting themselves in being that close, or not realising the risks of flying pretty much over the pits etc etc etc, and this isn't just helicopters, but far more often planes (yet apparantly heli's are more dangerous), especially with regards to flying over the pits.

People often say this is dangerous or that is dangerous, but the most dangerous thing at a club is the person on the sticks, because its only this person who can be lacking in respect for what a model can do to someone, not the model itself.
Political Correctness is a doctrine fostered by a delusional, illogical, liberal minority, and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end.

It has crossed my mind that if a minor bureaucrat in Brussels ever got hold of that picture he could justify his/her dubious position by legislating against flying RC helis due to their inherent instability and hence requiring licencing and a test before being allowed to fly or even buy a heli. I wouldn't put anything past the b******s!!

I think you're right, all it takes for something to be banned is for the wrong person to see something, this happened near me years ago.

There is a football field (about four pitches) that people used to fly models on, and apparantly someone crashed a plane in the middle of a pitch while a game was on.

It turned out that one of the players parents was on the council, and model flying was subsequently banned there, there are now signs up that say "no model aircraft flying" or words to that effect.

Oddly it's not listed in the bylaws as a place where it is banned, so whether the signs carry any weight legally is doubtful, but they where put up because of that incident.
