  • Half a gallon of Autos

    When I got my Raptor 30 (after only flying electric previously) I was forced into 2 autos, which made me careful about not running out of fuel again, but after what happened with Waynes engine last week and the potential for something else to go wrong, it was a timely reminder, so I thought I would auto practice tonight.

    I started about 3' high and by just hitting the TH switch to get used to the float of the heli to the ground. I gradually worked up to about 60' or so, balancing pitch and descent speed and I can't believe how much fun it is!

    Its a satisfying feeling when you get an absolute greaser, but I did have a few awkward bouncers, where I lost too much headspeed. Its unexpected to get so much energy back from the blades when you get it right, the heli seem to sit in the air for ages.

    Anyway, 4/5 tanks later and there's half a gallon gone in just auto practice, I had a blast!

    Its one of my favourite things to practise in Phoenix - shame I cant doing too much else in it LOL

      Autos are alot of fun

      and there not to hard to do are they?

      Impressive to the on lookers aswell

        I did my first autos today it was well cool once you get past that craping your pants stage.

          be careful doing continuos auto's in the hot weather as the engine can overheat
          i found out the hard way when i had an os91 let go the last auto of the day was when the engine blew up
          it overheated and siezed the piston
          after a couple of autos have a fly around and then do some more

            Guys,

            Yes they are fun, I always assumed they were only for emergencies, or competition!

            They are easier than I imagined, especially if you can control your sphincter initially, LOL!

            Thanks for that electricsceadu, I actually thought it would keep the motor cooler, because you close the motor down to idle for the glide! The motor did seem hot today, but it was only 1 click away from being too rich, with subsequent poor performance.

              Sorry but how can autos overheat your engine? Throttle hold only puts the engine to idle. l think you must have had something else going on there.

                Electricsceado is right. When you hit hold the engine is no longer burning fuel. The oil in the fuel also cools the engine during normal running. Continuous autos on a hot day don't allow the engine to cool hence the danger of seizure.

                  Then your engine is set wrong. l`ll do autos for you all day or leave my heli on tick over all day and it wont get hot never mind blow up.

                    Where did you get the engine from cos I want one I had to stop after 6 autos last weekend as my motor was gettig too hot. also rememner the fan will not be effective at idle

                      What your saying is that your engine runs hotter on tick over than it does on full throttle. Not that l`m a fan of carbsmart but if you watch one a few seconds after you land it will close the needle because the engine is cooling.

                        The head may cool but the rest may not remember, it is fuel that cools/lubricates your rear bearing, the heatsink is there to dissipate heat from the head.

                              Never tryied it but can`t see it being a problem. Engines run hot because the`re lean. Yes its been hot weather here for the last week or so but guy fly helis all over the world, we only got into the low 30s. Egypt was 48 (not that l know anyone who flys there) but its hot all year round. lts like you`re saying dont do autos if you live in Florida or telling Bobj dont go so high with those autos or your engine will blow before you get it down.
                              50 hyper BTW and cant remember where l got it.
