  • Best of times, worst of times!

Saturday the engine in my Rappy didn't seize up it internally exploded at 30 feet up, I was forced to do my first real life emergency auto rototation and landed her softly, Mike, (Pip) said it was a super landing too, only after she was down did my knees start to shake, I can thank Phoenix for that, Nudge, note to any newbie who thinks you don't need it take warning!

Anyway we took the motor off, the piston was cracked and parts missing, the Crank Shaft was just seized but had embedded itself into the crank casing, with thousands of iron filings dropping out everywhere, to say I was ****ed off was an understatement, as agreed by the others it was rightly a C**t situ'.

On a high note the Rappy is no worse for wear apart from the engine, as the whole secnero could have been a lot worse, so now a new engine has been ordered and she should be back to normal next week.

My bank balance however is another story, lol.

Well it's good that you recovered a very nasty situation and are still "smiling" about it.

Your bank balance will recover in time...

Typical scenario for this hobby - sh*t happens, but you managed to save your heli. A big WELL DONE!!! for that one, Wayne. Hopefully you'll have her flying again in a few days.

Dude, think of it this way:

If you fly with good carbon blades then a proper crash with your Raptor will cost about the same as replacing the engine, give or take a few quid. So whilst the engine failure wasn't your fault, you could just have easily gone down for the same money if you had made a mess of a loop or similar. If you'd have panicked and fluffed the auto then you'd be looking at double the cost.

        Be happy and repair.

Thank you for all the kind words and good advise, I've always said I'm never gonna practise emergency landings for the shear hell of it, however when it mattered most, my many hours of continuing Sim practice paid off big time.

This is one expect of my flying that's going to change from now on, and I was having such fun too, the Rappy's so large the flying distance and height it covers is such a massive distance, and she flys so smooth it was gutting being stopped mid session.

As rightly said the cost is minimal, about the same as a new batt for the T500, so it's value for money for sure.

Did I also mention that my Prankster brought it also due to complete aileron failure which spun her into a death spiral I couldn't recover from, I now have a new body to build which I brought from Inwoods, and all the electronics thankfully were A-OK once taken out.

These days happen, I haven't so much as dented anything in Christ knows how long, then in one day......Oh hum......

So all in it's cost around £180 to replace the Prank's body & replace the Rappys engine, as said before I can look back now and say I was dam lucky, thank god the Prank got mullered and not my R50, as that costs next to nothing for a complete rebuild.

Thanks mate, not too sure, she wasn't sounding great from the word go, regardless of what fuel adjustments Mike made for me, (still learning that part of things), then just before a downpour a clank sound came from the 50, I landed then we had to load all in our cars till the rain passed, then after some experimenting regardless what changes were made she was just running too rich, but lean it off and she'd become too hot.

She started to give warning signs while I was coming down from about 70ft and around 30ft the engine just stopped and you know the rest?

Tosh, bloody hell mate that must have been terrible to watch from that maneuver going wrong!

The date on the pic says its about 3 1/2 years ago so l`d been in helis for about 10 years. l`say at least 5 or 6 crashes a year, some on top range helis so you learn to just shug them off. lf you`re hooked you`re hooked. Just went home and clicked on a new kit.

Round of applause for bringing her home, I became an auto master when I used to run the TT50 in my Rap. I was good at auto's before I had even got my training gear off! Was it the TT engine or an OS?

Thank you mate, it was an OS hyper 50 engine, or should I say it once was.
