  • Near-Miss

This morning I came very close to writing off the 600NSP. I am have a little difficulty with turning back to the right after crossing in front from right to left. I have no problem turning right when the heli is in front of me. I seem to loose the visual aspect of when the heli is level and today ended up with a massive side slip that required quick reactions and lots of collective to recover without incident. Soooo close!

Does anyone have ideas/tips on what to watch on the heli - looking at the skids doesn't seem to work for me. A friend has suggest hi-vis tape on the outside of the skids???

I am sure its just a matter of practice...I have no problems with this manoeuvre (or more advanced stuff) on Phoenix.
    Shaun.

This is why I've still got training gear on.

The fluoro-balls make it far more obvious what's going on (esp as I made such a mess of the wiring I can't get the canopy on...)

Obviously I want to get the TG off, but right now it makes it much easier.

I lost the training gear as soon as I could land without problems, the vibration that it induces can upset the heli - especially the gyro.

I find concentrating on the skids makes the whole problem much worse: I tried it at the weekend to see what would happen and nearly lost it - avoid!

Having a canopy that is split with 2 very bright colours helps loads, i also highly recommend orange skids. I have them fitted to my 600 electric and they help loads IMO. I have yellow ones fitted too the 500 and they aint so good Dont just rely on the skids for reference though. Look at the heli as a whole. Many reference points depending on position of the helicopter... canopy/skids/rotor disk/horizontal and vertical fins (if you colour them)

...and anyway Shaun, you really need to get that first crash behind you!

Surely it was a near-hit, not a near-miss? How can you nearly miss something? You either miss it or nearly hit it?

Not really, for example if two aircraft come into close proximity during flight, the captain is required by the CAA/FAA to file an 'Air-Miss' report. As I work in the RAF, the term near miss is in common use for a wide range of events when things go wrong or do not quite work out as planned.

Cheers Si, I am going to try the hi-vis undercarriage legs as suggested by Lee. I'll probably do the cheap version first thought - dayglo !
