out again todayI flew an align trex 550e v1 for the first time and I have to say the thunder tiger raptor e550 is a far better machine in flight than the trex 550

Hey
Had a mixed session today. Been pushing my charging system now and charged 10x 3300mA 6s packs this morning using a parallel charge board. I hooked up 6 packs on one channel and 4 on the other. channel 1 was charging at 20A and channel 2 at 13A. At the wall socket it was pulling 4.1A at 950W. So all good there and within the range of the new generator that's turning up next week. This will complete my setup and mean I can charge fast at the field.
After watching Mr Grumpy fly earlier in the week I thought I would push things along. He makes it look easy lol!
So first pack of flying for a week I was straight into stall turns and loops, by the second pack I was doing inverted hovering / FF all from the top of the loop with plenty of height. Everything was going really well and was really enjoying it. Just tried to push away the doubt and try and gain the confidence.
I tried a roll from the top of the loop to upright and went a little too far as I was so high. So it started to come down on its side, but no panic, just observed its orientation and made the necessary corrections. I had it sorted before it got within 20 meters of the floor! All good.
I am kinda letting the heli hold its own at the top of the loop. I was working up to using a little cyclic input in in inverted FF so I can get my head around what does what. I seem to be pretty good at getting the heli level and good inverted at the top of the loop, just need to sus out whats happening control wise and get some rules / exit strategy worked out in my head so I can push things along a little further.
Went to pop the forth pack in and as I was carrying the 600l out to the flight line, as it was bouncing off my leg when carrying it on the head, I noticed the motor was rotating both ways depending how it was bouncing off my leg. Knew straight away the OWB had seized again. It did this about 4 months ago. I use a silicone grease on it, what is everyone else using?
So that was the end of the 600l for today.
Got the goblin out, and thought I would give that a blast. Again stall turns and inverted at the top of the loop. It came out of a stall turn quiet fast, and it was moving away from me on my left, so I but it into a right banked turn and all of a sudden it had a wobble and I heard a massive, fast, oscillating whirl. I panicked a little and levelled it out, by this point it was traveling away from me but perpendicular to the flight line. It was at quiet a distance, probably 30 or 40 meters away. I turned it round gingerly and limped it back in my direction. My initial thoughts were something had gone wrong with either the ESC or the main drive, and I was expecting the ESC to either shut down or loose all drive to the head. I got it back to the flight line, turned it round and got it sat down sharpish.
I am sure some of you belt drive tail guys may of guessed, but what had happened was the tail assembly had slid forward on the adjustment and unloaded the tail belt. The initial shudder must of been as it suddenly slid forward the motor would of unloaded a fraction.
Looking over the heli, I saw straight away the tail assembly had moved as it was all the way forward and I have a mark on the boom for the 'tensioned' tail casing position. I picked the heli up by its tail with the packs in and it never moved, so it appeared tight. but upon checking the screws they were certainly not tight.
Its about the goblins 6th or 7th flight, so maybe the double sided tape inside the boom had compressed enough to unload the screws. I was lucky I didn't loose the tail drive completely between it jumping teeth or even the belt coming off the front pulley. There was a bit of belt debris about the boom, tail and main gear from where the belt had rubbed together in the boom etc, so I think I will replace it to be safe for what they cost. I will put this down to experience, and make sure I take care and check the tail fasteners prior to each session!
Anyways so went to the field with two flying copters and came home with issues on them both. The bonus was nothing went it, which I am happy at and certainly not complaining about. Just a bit of a shame as I was in a bit of a zone on the 600l and was really enjoying it.
its one thing I miss on the electrics, is the long continuous flight times, where on the nitro I used to fly you could just continuously do moves and get them dialled in. Hopefully when the generator gets here next week I can get back in to that as I can extend my sessions past 5 packs on the 600 and 1 pack on the 570!Last edited by cjm180; 16-04-2017, 07:35 PM.Kr
