  • It was jolly windy at sunny MK today. So much that I nearly lost my 700!

The quadders did all right though. I had a look through fpv goggles as a passenger, very interesting.

    • Wind was 7mph when I started flying at 9am. The wind reached 15mph when I decided to pack up at 1pm. The Compass behaved impeccably. I just don't get very long flight times with it. Never mind.

      • Got to the flying field as the only two people there were leaving. Would have been brilliant having the field to myself if it weren't for the wind 15mph+ with strong gusts. Had one flight but gave up and went home.

              • It was crazy windy today at Epsom Downs, the strongest wind I have seen up there yet. I think it was supposed to be 15 or so with gusts of about 30 but it really felt more like just 30 all the time.

I did maiden the JR E8 but realised pretty quickly that I need way more pitch range than I have setup on it right now. With the motor I have at the moment the headspeed is on the low side so it's going to need a few degrees more collective. But, so far so good.

                  Seriously Harry,

You must learn to wake up earlier!!

You've been missed at the field but the good news is it's longer nights all the time! Hopefully by the time I get back we can have quite a few night sessions (I know you'll be awake by then!).

You maidened a heli yesterday? Wow. It was nearly storm-force winds here. Glad it went okay, that E8 looks nice!

I've had... 7 flights today, all with the Chase. Hopefully the rest of the electronics for my 6HVU will come in the next couple of days, then I'm in for some fun!

It was flying great and I was just about ready to be 'converted' when out of the blue something whacked me in the chest knocking the Tx out of by grasp. By the time i regained control the little Blade had buried itself in the dirt and was smashed up pretty bad. Turns out a large pit bull type dog had jumped up on me, I didn't even see it coming. The dog owner (aka 'scumbag') was accross the far side of the field and when he saw what happened he just turned tail and scarpered with the dog running after him

Bits for the repair set me back £80

On the positive side, it could have been much worse If I'd been flying one of the big helis. Here's the fleet before the dog encounter:

Thanks Yeah the wind was seriously OTT so not at all ideal for a maiden. The first flight was just on the hover patch setting tail gain and basic stuff then one more proper flight but it wasn't fun, struggling like crazy to go upwind and getting thrown all over the place. I think the E8 will be really good in more civilised weather, at least I know what needs adjusting before the next time. The headspeed is limited with this motor so it needs a couple degrees more collective and then hopefully it will all gel nicely.

I also flew my Beam 450, which was really silly, it literally could not get upwind at times! The Beam 600 was OK but I had a few scary moments and after a while it was time to pack up and go while they were still in one piece.

                          • Wow, I can't imagine flying and not being able to get upwind. I flew my old X3 in pretty strong winds a couple of times but never had trouble getting upwind.

I charged four packs for the Chase today, and on the third got disoriented and ended up flying through a tree. This left a madly spinning heli which "rescue" still pulled up, but, turns out I'm not that good at piro travel! Anyway, I got that down without much damage (convenient bushes), but the entire tail is missing :-(

Well, the intervention of the crazy dog came a bit too soon but I'm very much looking forward to giving the 180 another try go and if I can put a few batteries through it without issue I'll call myself a convert! The 180 certainly flies very nicely, much smoother and 'bigger' flying than any other micro heli I've flown.
