Blade decay Tim & my hamfisted aproach to pitch management
Try doing a mini auto from a foot off the deck with your 500 you will find that even from that height the blades slow so much you get that head wobble that we all associate with having the wrong pinion on.
Sure the experts can fire them in from a few hundred foot up in an auto but watch how quick they bring them down to keep that head speed up. Anyone thinking of trying their first real to life auto would be well advised to do it on a 50 sized heli like the knight sport or raptor 50 leave the 450's & 500's to the experts as blade weight makes them a bitch to auto & the softstart will allways catch you out if you bottle an auto on an electric heli.

Wow , The idea of bring a heli down on auto is daunting enough without the thought that you lot can bullseye a table . Then doing it inverted ..... If I end up flying a fraction as well then I'll be happy lol . Damn your good
autos on the 500 are perfectly do able, but not the easiest machine to learn them on by a long way! the bigger the heli, the more blade energy available and therefore the easier they will auto (generally!). i.e. a 90 size will hang at the end of an auto for what seems like an eternity, whereas the 450 is much more of a hit and hope machine!

Lol
That's my autos on any size heli. The only difference is that the bigger the heli, the more chance it has of being flyable again
Seriously though, the 500 will auto okay but nothing beats a simulator for practise, practise, practise. The first one for real will still be daunting but you might just surprise yourself on how well you cope.
There is a area called 'the dead mans curve' where the heli is just high enough to so it can't 'float' down to the ground damage free and not quite high enough or flying forward with enough speed to sucessfully flare (trade rotor speed for lift) and land. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Height-velocity_diagram
It applies to full size and, to a certain extent, our models too.
also depends what blades you have on, a 450 with vblades, might as well bring a bin liner, 90 with flexable carbons, will hang for ever.
Even found my 600 a pain to auto with vblades on, much better with radix or 600D blades.
