I just started to rebuild me 450l and the motor won't turn. My 50amp hobby wing esc got hot and the servos were messing around a bit. I disconnected the motor and it seems ok now and the only thing I can think of is the motor is broken? I crashed because the helicopter just stopped flying. It's not seized because I can turn it by hand but it does smell a bit. Anyone any ideas?

If it smalls of burning the a winding is almost certainly burned out, if so the motor is 'toast' unless you are up to doing a re-wind, which isn't really worth the effort on smaller motors even if you have the ability. If you pull the can off the motor you should be able to see any burned windings.Goblin Kraken, SoXos Strike 7, XLPower Specter, Goblin Black Thunder T, Goblin 700 Speed, Goblin 770 Comp Carbon, Trex 700X, Kasama Dune, Henseleit TDR

PS.. if you want a cheap motor one of these will do the job: https://hobbyking.com/en_us/turnigy-...size-heli.htmlGoblin Kraken, SoXos Strike 7, XLPower Specter, Goblin Black Thunder T, Goblin 700 Speed, Goblin 770 Comp Carbon, Trex 700X, Kasama Dune, Henseleit TDR

Thanks mate. I did see a puff of smoke when I crashed but couldn't work out where it come from. I bought a new esc just in case. I never thought it would have been the motor though. Just bought the turnigy so I'll see how that goes.Originally posted by Grumpy View PostIf it smalls of burning the a winding is almost certainly burned out, if so the motor is 'toast' unless you are up to doing a re-wind, which isn't really worth the effort on smaller motors even if you have the ability. Somehow I've burnt out another stock motor and I've replaced it with the hobbyking one grumpy adviced. But why am I burning them out I'd like to know? It can't be my flying because I'm not that good lol.Align Trex 700XN VBar Neo with Pro Rescue

Have you made any modifications to the heli or have you changed any settings in the ESC? Is it running on the recommended voltage battery? Check that the rotor turns freely and that the mesh between the pinion and main gear is not too tight (there should be a hair of clearance at all points in the rotation).Goblin Kraken, SoXos Strike 7, XLPower Specter, Goblin Black Thunder T, Goblin 700 Speed, Goblin 770 Comp Carbon, Trex 700X, Kasama Dune, Henseleit TDR

Check that the pwm and timing settings on your ESC are correct for the motor you're running, also make sure the motor is powerful enough to handle the model you're flying.
What motor and ESC are you using?Helis: Oxy 2 FE / Oxy 2 Sport / Protos 380 / Oxy 4 Max / Gaui X3 380mm

myxiplx,
It's a Trex 450L, using the standard motor.. So my assumption is it's all bog stock Align 'Super Combo' equipment. But for sure if it's not or anything has been adjusted that could be relevant.
Keith,
If you do ever crash, even just a minor tip-over, it's absolutely essential that you cut power to the motor either before impact or at least immediately on impact. If you leave power to a motor that's jammed and cant turn the motor will burn out almost instantly (and/or the ESC in many cases).Last edited by Grumpy; 08-06-2017, 07:22 AM.Goblin Kraken, SoXos Strike 7, XLPower Specter, Goblin Black Thunder T, Goblin 700 Speed, Goblin 770 Comp Carbon, Trex 700X, Kasama Dune, Henseleit TDR

It's a long shot but are the motor securing screws the correct length? If they are too long they may be contacting the stator windings and causing a short?
Good luck, MartyMarty

I've had 2 different ESCs on so I don't think it's that. Pinion possibly by my gut feeling says it's not but it's something I'll be aware of on setup. I'll get a current sensor on it to see what amps are when I'm flying.Originally posted by Grumpy View PostHave you made any modifications to the heli or have you changed any settings in the ESC? I've had the stock motor and ESC on when it happened the first time and a hobbywing 50 amp ESC and stock motor the second time.Originally posted by myxiplx View PostCheck that the pwm and timing settings on your ESC are correct for the motor you're running, also make sure the motor is powerful enough to handle the model you're flying.

First crash the Heli stopped flying at height, second one was similar but low.Originally posted by Grumpy View Postmyxiplx,
