  • Whoops! Tried to kill my 250 again!

This was a good one, I was working on tic-tocks in the back garden when the helicopter absolutely launched itself into the ground.

I think a pitch link snapped while inverted, but the end result was impressive. The 250 drove itself into the ground inverted at pretty much full collective. Both blades snapped off and flew away, and the head and mainshaft buried themselves into the earth. It took quite a tug to get it out!

Definitely my most expensive crash in a while, in theory £42 of parts, but I had all the spare parts here, didn't even have to strip down my second 250, and I reckon I might be able to salvage the blade grips.

    • Bent main shaft
    • Destroyed feathering shaft
    • All four main grip bearings
    • Bent sides of both main grips (should be able to file them down smooth again)
    • Lost my Lynx head dampers
    • Tore both DFC blade grip ball links apart
    • Destroyed one servo output gear
    • Bent one servo output shaft

Anybody know if you can replace the output shaft of a DS410 servo?

Oh I have two 250's and a bucket load of spares, it's already up and flying. I buy these second hand, so they usually come with spares which meant I had all the parts to repair this on hand, I just didn't get around to posting the pic until today :-)

This 250 is my beater, it flies great and is cheap to crash, it's my real life sim :-) My goal is to be able to do a piro loop with it in the back garden, and you can bet it'll be crashed a good few times before I can pull that one off!

That's quite an impressive crash! Glad to hear you got it back up and running so quickly

Yesterday I just had my second crash with my 180 CFX. Went straight in inverted under full power in IU2 (5000 rpm I believe). Not quite sure what happened if I'm honest, I'd been doing simple flips and inverted hovering at a safe height and I was just flipping back upright ready to come in to land and suddenly it just went straight down inverted at full speed from a height of about 30 ft - maybe I simply went the wrong way on collective, but anyway it punched into the ground in literally a second, no time to react at all. It was one of those "did I really just see that happen" moments. I thought it would be dead, but I was flying over a corn field and when I went to find it I could see this neat little crop circle with the heli sitting upside down at the bottom. Total damage was one upper plastic swash link (ejected and lost in crash) and a tiny hairline crack in the top of the canopy. The Lynx servo savers worked perfectly, the left aileron servo arm had rotated almost a full half turn down, saving the gears for sure. Put it back in position and servos all seem to be working fine on the bench. No tail damage either with the Lynx slipper TT and not even a stripped main gear even though I thought I was a bit slow on the TH. No other damage as far as I could see, but haven't had chance to test hover it yet. So thumbs up to both Lynx and the farmer's corn I was very lucky actually as it hit the corn field literally a couple of feet from the hard footpath. Had it hit the path I think it would have just exploded into tiny pieces!

That's a good survival story, good to hear you enjoying the 180CFX. I reckon with the servo savers and slipper clutch that's up there as one of the best beaters you can get.

I'd buy one but I know Lynx are working on an Oxy2, and I'm crossing my fingers that their servo saver arms will fit that too :-)

Maybe I'll kill my 180 just in time to replace it with an OXY 2
