As for cost between the two Phil is right it's all bollocks, just fly whichever power plant you prefer and you'll not notice any difference and tbh if cost really is an issue then flying and being addicted to helis is the wrong thing to get into!
I agree 100%, but then I'd much rather trust a newbie (I mean no disrespect when I say "trust") with a IC engine then several 6S packs and a charger...

I prefer to buy optis as at least they have a good UK warranty and andy to back you up if something does go wrong.
But then look at Scorpion packs at £140 per 5000mAh 6S pack. They make Haiyin packs, which cost £62 each. My Rush is scarily powerful on those

I can only go by the packs i use, Turnigies mainly. They do all i ask of them and they cost less than £50 per pack, maybe they wouldnt be good enough for some but they do fine for me. You dont HAVE to buy the most expensive hardware available on earth. I've had great results from 'cheap as chips' Hobbyking YEP ESC's, or Castles which are reasonably priced too. And quality IC engines don't come cheap anyway.

I dont use a genny, just buy a few (cheap) packs. Yes i need a charger but I.C. needs a ton of field gear, and you still need a battery charger anyway, albeit smaller. Again though you don't have to spend a fortune on a charger, £100 gets you a 1000W charger: Turnigy Reaktor 30A 1000W Balance Charger

I actually really like glow engines, I've got a few and have been using then for 40 years plus... but for me right now they are a non starter anyway because of noise, but fuel cost is a real issue on the bigger glow stuff, unless you really are in the fortunate position of 'money no object', or you dont fly much. By SaneAdam's own figures he's spending well over £3000 per year on fuel alone. The same number of flights on my 700 e-heli would cost about £700, including battery replacement and mains electricity to charge (I can bore you with the maths if you want)

Yeah, horses for courses... I get it.

Hmmm "money know object"... You can be the wealthiest guy on earth but no one (especially wealthy people) likes wasting money (and not getting their money's worth).

Most HK stuff is just cloned from other top brands, so out of principle I won't buy it. Lipos are dangerous and one bad experience with a HK lipo has equally me off buying them.

So, rather than buying ten HK lipos I bought a couple of opti's and a genny. 230 cycles on that pair and they still pull!

Anyway, the point is both have their merits so I fly both.

For actual flying experience I think I prefer nitro, there is something really graceful to it, I love it.

after a year and a bit of pure electrics, ive got back into nitro. Bloody awesome!!

Nitro are super cool to watch fly, but can be an arse to set up properly. But if you want balls out power and ease of use then electric is where you should be looking.

Personally I think there is no point in £100 per pack lipos when a £40 Turnigy blue is perfectly adequate and ive been getting 160ish flights per pack too!! Yes an Optipower/Thunder Power battery is a superior battery. There is no denying that. But ive had really satisfactory results from Turnigy Blues.

To be fair i have only had the Nitro since December… but if i do keep flying it as much as i am it is certainly going to rack up. Warmer weather coming so i can't imagine I'm suddenly going to fly less. Past few weeks i have only been out twice a week because of the weather though. So yes it may not end up 3k accounting for terrible weather.

But if you fly an obsessive amount… you will need a lot of fuel. Obviously if you fly less or take flying more recreationally then you may not hit anywhere near those kinds of figures or fuel needs. I was judging things purely based on my own activities. I have already asked Fast Lad how many cases i would need to buy to start getting a discount due to thinking… I'm going to burn through a lot of this stuff… bulk purchase maybe?!

Either way, fly, enjoy and repeat

No body has mentioned, oil, smell, noise, smoke, burnt fingers, constant tinkering! You can't beat nitro far better than whiny electric motors. .

Graceful is the word I would use when relating nitro flying to leccy. I could watch Andy K fly nitro all day long He makes it look graceful
