Yes, but you have to change the receiver to a Spektrum or a Spektrum compatible.Originally posted by AnthD View PostPs. Would it be possible to use the DX8 with the Phantom!?
Plenty of info out there just do a search for something like "dji phantom and spektrum dx8" here's a couple of videos to get you going.

Sorry, i should have added 'unless you change the receiver and telemetry'.. Guess it depends on if you want to start changing out the guts of the thing if you already have a working DJI Tx?Last edited by Grumpy; 18-01-2015, 08:03 AM.Goblin Kraken, SoXos Strike 7, XLPower Specter, Goblin Black Thunder T, Goblin 700 Speed, Goblin 770 Comp Carbon, Trex 700X, Kasama Dune, Henseleit TDR

The 3GX isn't the greatest flybarless unit. Once setup, it flies OK, but the configuration of it is really clunky. It's a windows-only software setup, it needs 7 channels rather than 6 for a spektrum setup and the push-button, LED blinking setup steps (DIR) mode as just awful IMO. Frankly I think it is the most user-unfriendly (certainly for beginners) units out there.
3 servos? - you need three for the swashplate for an eCCPM (collective pitch) heli, and one more for the tail servo. See image (of a Goblin) at bottom of this post, and also watch this vid :
Most people tend to swap 3GX units for either a BeastX, or the Spartan VX1(e/n) or a vBar.
As for programming the 3GX - it's complex (as I mention). You need a mixture of a USB cable that comes with it, some Windows software to tune it, and then it's a fairly complex setup using buttons on the unit ... If you really want to know - look on YouTube for the "Freddy can fly 3gx setup" videos, but personally I had a 3GX and hated it so swapped it for a BeastX (AR7200BX). I've later converted all my helis to Spartan VX1n's

Thanks for the Video Tom good watch , and thanks for the school boy question answer in detail for me ! I feel Im gaining a lot more knollage as the weeks go on now and Heliaddict makes this a lot easier to achieve ! So from what you say a few posts ago I could order a Heli Just standalone without the electronics and order what I wanted eg. Spartan VX1ns (which I'll reserch today) and just order the servos and FBL system seprate? This will all just link in with my Spectrum once binded?
thanks for the response Grumpy and SGD ,
Quite right I have a perfectly fine DJI Set up I don't really need to change for a expense and pain in the ass! Just wondered if the spectrum would bind !
Thaks again

No, the 550 uses a single 6s 5000mAh Lipo. If you wanted to use your 500 batteries (about 3000mAh 6s) then you would be looking at a Trex 600 or similar.Goblin Kraken, SoXos Strike 7, XLPower Specter, Goblin Black Thunder T, Goblin 700 Speed, Goblin 770 Comp Carbon, Trex 700X, Kasama Dune, Henseleit TDR

The heli in the video is a Curtis Youngblood Next D "Rave" flown by Carl Groover. To be honest, I think they're a few years out of date now tech wise and the only stockist I know is Fast Lad. I think CY are focusing more on their collective pitch quad (the Stingray).
It's actually worth watching the entire playlist of the Smarter Every Day heli series .. all interesting stuff ... The night flying and the heli speed limit is really good I think.

The night flight is crazy , some great shots with the slow shutter speed! I've seen the night kits have you used one ? .. I thought they where just some cheesey light show when I saw them at first but this Vid is really good ! Serious flying skils !!
What size is the CY Heli there in comparison to the 500 I presume bigger Tom !sigpic

Yup, it's a 700. The Trex 500 swings 425mm blades (despite the 500 moniker). The Rave swings 700mm blades ...

And no, I'm not brave enough to try night flying! Personally, I think the "Magic night blades" give the best effect though!

The 'size' of a heli can be misleading when it's quoted in mm or inches. Added to the confusion is that larger helis size designation is their actual blade length, but smaller ones isn't blade length but just some random designation that doesn't really relate to anything tangible (for instance a '450' has blades in the range 325-360mm). 500 size helis are sometimes a 'true' 500 with 500 blades and sometimes (like the Trex) smaller, with 425mm blades.
The weight of the heli really tells more as to how 'massive' they feel in real life. In round figures:
- A 500 (425mm blade size) is twice the weight of a 450
- A 550 is twice the weight of a 500
- A700 is twice the weight of a 550
A 600 is obviously somewhere between a 550 and a 700 but closer to the 550.Goblin Kraken, SoXos Strike 7, XLPower Specter, Goblin Black Thunder T, Goblin 700 Speed, Goblin 770 Comp Carbon, Trex 700X, Kasama Dune, Henseleit TDR

its fine flying the trex 550 on either a single 6s 5000 pack or two trex 500 packs.... but not more than 2 x 2650mah packs, and they will need to be higher c rating or it will kill them. I have been using 2 x 40c 500packs in my 550 for the last year.Originally posted by AnthD View PostAlso is the Trex 550 using X2 Trex 500 lipos? Or is that just a option with a larger motor?
