Hoverbike RC scale model and full manned aircraft

Something I am sure a some of you here will be interested in. I have had the opportunity to be involved in the development of a hoverbike for manned use. Part of the development has been with the use of scale models and now the company is launching a kickstarter campaign to make the scale model accesable to everyone, take a look.

I love it! And I'm not generally a big fan of quads and drones etc.

Just curious, what is the effect of having part of the rotors overlap like that in the middle? Do you lose anything in downward thrust? The only gain I can see is just making it more compact and slightly simpler in that the overlapping rings support the motors.

Yes, put a scale man on top and all of a sudden it takes on a new meaning compared to the multirotors you commonly see.

You pretty much have it figured. The overlapping rotors are for compactness and efficiency of design. To split them would increase the width quite significantly and take away from the aircraft's purpose, as well as increasing structure.

You have GOT to make a Return of the Jedi style body kit for the full size version with a ducted fan on the back for boosting propulsion. DAM!! even light sabre will become science FACT soon.

As seen in the earlier prototype (the bicopter) mesh guards will be in place on the manned version. These were not implemented in the scale model since they do not scale so well.

The reason for the overlap is to make it compact width ways but still retain 4 independent props, this is actually the crooks of the whole design as by having just 2 props you wouldn't be able to stabilize both x and y axis thus falling off.

Thanks, I will see if I get the chance, would be good to see what you all think. As you can probably tell, I have been struggling to get down to SHH recently. I will do my best to get down again though before the good weather ends.

The 10,000ft ceiling and 173mph were theoretical maximums for the bicopter design.

Good news as of yesterday evening that the kickstarter campaign reached and exceeded its goal, the 1/3rd scale hoverbike drones will be going into production.
