Not at all mate there fantastic images, I love how the wing vortices's stand out in image two
There all superb but the backdrop in images one & Three are simply breath taking.
First class photography mate, I'm looking forward to this year as all the shows I went to last year my camera was seriously uncalibrated, a batch of 400D's left the factory with the settings cocked up, trust me to buy one of them lol, and all the exposures were terribly under exposed which resulted in loads of PS work.
This year hopefully should be great fun, now my camera body is playing ball.
Tim, when taking images with your larger Primes, even though the stabilizer takes care of most image shake do you find using lengths above 400mm really needs some kind of support be it mono or tripod?

I very rare use my tripod Wayne, Only for static landscape stuff, All sports and moving targets are very restricted when fastened to a tripod so 99% of my shots are handheld.
Even portait shots are handheld as I find better angles when moving around the subject.
One here of my god daughter. Getting skintones are very importent along with that beautiful bokeh.
Thanks mate, I've yet too use my 100-400 on fast moving subjects but having a nice sunny day so the objective can catch as much detail as poss' is much needed.
I ask as the other day the Police chopper was hovering near my house, he must have been around 1000 FT and when I took photo's of her many had a little shake, even though she was hovering, but it was a bit over cast.
I was using up to 1/700th shutter on some shots so i think possibly I never gave the chip enough open time for detail, plus I guess as well the chopper was still moving slightly while in hover so this may be why some of the images had a little shake in them, but on a few the focus was a tad out.
Yes looking at them again I think it was a focus issue more than anything with the Police chopper, should I take the lens in to be checked or as the heli was so high up the auto focus struggled a bit
Trouble with the 100-400 the focus wheel moves up with your hand when pulling out for long focal lengths, so I have to be careful not to touch the focus ring, which I fear may have been the focus issue I had the other day, when I tested it on static objects and made an effort not to go anywhere near the focus ring every shot was pin sharp, like a shot I took on a house roof from 50 yards, when viewed and actual size you could see individual Moss hairs growing on the tiles.
The image of your beautiful God daughter is priceless, and from a photographic stand point faultless, with superb DOF.

Taking shots of helicopters is difficult because you have to strike a balance between pinsharp and getting rotor blur hence making the prop look like its moving, Too higher shutter speed will freeze the prop giving a pinsharp image but the prop isnt moving.. = useless.
I get the shutterspeed down to as little as 250 300 which will give the motion effect but at the risk of an out of focus shot. Thats where a steady hand makes for a better shot.
Also try to keep the ISO as low as possible as you know the higher you go the more "noise" you get in the picture.
This Chinook shot was taken at Waddington with a shutterspeed as low as 1/100th sec but look, those rotors are moving not static..
Thanks mate with the Police heli I was using ISO 400 with center point focusing and partial metering, but the heli was OOF, yet others were razor sharp with the pilot's helmet easily seen in the flight-deck.
But again she was high up and at 400mm it's like holding a small telescope and keeping it steady, but I was a little disappointed when I saw some were OOF, possibly when I hit the half way focus lock on some images it locked off the heli just slightly, but living near two USAF air bases I'll get plenty of practice before the air shows.
I guess it's trial and error, and just getting used to the new lens and it's quirks.
As I say all the other shots the image quality and exposure has been faultless.
I like your CH-47 image very much, again a great balance between rota movement and pin point focus with the body.

Hey guys as a keen photographer, Im aftaid my pics dont always come up to the quality that your getting, sorry but im not sure Stuart would appreciate me posting some of the pics from my last photo shoot LOL
Being a happily luckyish amateur myself, using Nikon gear (D80, 18-200VR, 70-300VR, 105/2.8 VR micronikkor, SB800, velbon CF535 tripod + QHD61), I've yet to bring my gear to an airshow. Maybe I'll get there finally.
However, seeing such awesome shots as those presented here, gives me a little hint over how long I still have to go.
