  • My last photo shoot

I'd like to share some good news that happened a little while back.

As many of you don't know I'm a very keen amateur photographer (Canon man myself) and my main interest is air show's, landscape and portrait photography.

Three weeks back I done some photo work for Mark Petro who won the best chippy award last year and previous years, and he's just opened a new chippy/restaurant in Ely.

I spent a morning with him doing a shoot with a pictorial theme of fish from the Trawler to the plate and Spuds from the field to the firer to the bag, well so far three of my images in 3x2ft sized images are now on display in the restaurant which was the whole point of the venture, plus he's opening up an above restaurant and last year I done a Barry Norman shoot with the local press, but I done a few group shots of the team and him which are also being displayed.

So I'm quite chuffed about this, and on Friday we visited Ely and went to view my work, the restaurant was packed and everyone was looking at me wondering "what's that twat doing" until I explained to a couple of friendly old gals I was the photographer then a barrage of questions were fired at me, felt really good, and they asked how they were taken and was I a pro' I said just an enthusiastic amateur, but they said you'd have never known.

In the past I've had images displayed in newspapers, on the TV with a recent Comet last year, a hot air balloon festival, plus I done the promo shots for a series called Country Lives when they filmed at Fieldview Astro guest house, among other private shoots for family and friends.

This year I purchased my dream air show lens the Canon 100-400mm IS L, a truly beautiful lens built like a tank and the optics are beyond question, so I'm looking forward to this years season as before my biggest lens has been the 70-200mm F/4 L, a great lens but hasn't the reach of my new Jobie.

Anyway I just wanted to share my good news as it doesn't happen often.

    Congrats mate.

I'm just getting back into the enthusiastic amateur photography, after a break of some years. the camera I had then was the CanonAE1 which had just come out, shows how long ago that was, did all the usual landscapes, portraits etc.

    Divorce and sold all stuff.

Just bought a Pentax K100D, just the basic rig, got to start building up the lenses now. I have took a few of my LHC members flying but with only the basic zoom facility and PC editing suite my scope is pretty limited at the mo.

Be nice to see your pics especially the air shows.

      Congrats on that acheavment Wayne..

I'll bet I have been to many airshows that you have attended too.

          Thank you Gaz.

I remember the AE1, great camera those were the days when cameras were made of metal not plastic like today.

The Pentax K100D is a blinding piece of kit, a few members on my photographic forum have these and the results are great, use this link to view the aviation section image's on the forum, my user ID is Fenstar42, but a chap there called Douglas uses the Pentax cameras and he's images are fantastic.

          http://www.s5000.net/phpBB2/viewforum.php?f=81&sid=dccb1c8d1ded899cba9d0333568 7ddd1

During the mid Eighties I used Practica BC1 and Nikon FE, cameras, trouble was back then Nikon lenses were well out of my pocket so I purchased more lenses for my good old East German camera.

Have a look at my gallery's here, I'm uploading images each day so its still a work in progress.

What editing suite do you use, I have PS CS2 which is fantastic, as taking the photo's is the quick part, editing the images can take 10-15 minutes per image depending what you want to do, but it's good to hear another photographer is on this forum.

Many thanks for your reply mate.

Thank you BB, wow your collection of equipment is the stuff I can only dream about, and after seeing your fantastic images I wish I'd never mentioned I do aviation images lol.

We do the Duxford airshows and hopefully going to do the Waddington show as well, so it would be cool to meet up and say Hi.

But I'm jealous sick of your gear, thats one mighty set up you have there my friend.

That would be great bud', just viewing your last image I think I'm going to pack it in, lol, that's an amazing close up.

My new lens hasn't been used for airshows yet, and my previous shots were taken with an uncalibrated 400D, which Canon corrected after the last Duxford air show in Sept last year.

I've got to ask, what was the Exif data on those shots as there so bright and detailed, my lenses are F/4 so I either have to pump up the ISO if it's cloudy like it was at the last show, well more hazy then anything, of do some heavy PS work or histogram stretches in the Canon Pro suite.

I've not long got into photography myself. Still am quite out of my depth though, I don't know how to use half the functions on my cam. I'm at my last day of a IT 'Boot Camp' and then will be looking to take an accelerated photography course... anyone recomend anywhere? Idealy a fast track course, somewhere away from home and if possible, accomadation etc including in the price?

I've got the following so far in my collection:

                  Canon EOS 400D
Canon EF-S 17-85mm F4-5.6 IS USM Ultrasonic Autofocus Telephoto Zoom Lens
Sigma DG MACRO F4-5.6 70-300mm Lens
                  Canon EF-S 18-55mm Lense
Couple of batteries and 4 GB CF Cards.

Small world innit?! I was at FL too, I usually head for the FOD tent, as I'm a member. And love video shooting the shows. My photography is limited to static displays.

                              Seriously cool photos guys

I just love those old war birds at shows like Biggin Hill. If I just got one photo like those in a whole day of button pressing I would be well chuffed!

                              Nice one
