I think it's a trait that we all belittle our own level of flying, I guess we feel it's better to exceed expectation than to disappoint ?

Thanks... And I think it's true, I've seen people fly really well, and then moan!

I had a fly (short one) on Friday afternoon. I was keen to see what it was like to fly at a public event and get a feel for a completely new field. I chose the very left spot so as to keep out of the way of the other helis. Jack Bishop was kind enough to stand with me and after a brief chat began some steady eights etc.

The two fields that I normally fly at have plenty of mature trees (you know what’s coming) and to date I’ve never messed with them but for some totally baffling reason I managed to misjudge my distance with one of those huge conifers.

Despite Jack’s warning and some evasive stick input, I still managed to collect the outer foliage. A split second later and it would have gone in much deeper and probably still be up there. Throttle hold – walk of shame.

The usual damage to the heli is not cheap but can be fixed quickly. The knock to one’s confidence in distance perception is another matter though.
The fact that even the pros get it wrong occasionally, isn’t much comfort because they are really pushing it while I'm just pootlin about

The lesson here I guess is - maybe start off with a smallish model like a 500 that feels comfortable in a confined space and get a feel for the terrain and light before flying the big stuff. How you competition pilots keep track of your helis against that light I don’t know. Maybe you can recommend some flying glasses to this old bloke?

Many thanks Jack for you help in picking the bits up.

          Marty.

PS – Great flying Rachel on Sunday afternoon!

Thank you :-) , now don't be to hard on yourself , those trees get the best of us , just ask Ben Varley ;-) .
I Wouldnt fly on that peg as the trees were stupidly close

Ha! In a way that would have been better Don. Instead there was a hushed "Aaaah" look, the old bloke has crashed his antique heli - bless!

Maybe I could get some sponsorship from the RNIB next year

Of down to my local field now to take it out on some saplings

                  Cheers, Marty
