I find the predictive text on my phone will "guess" the wrong word and becuase it changes that particular word once the spacebar has been pressed your attention is now on the next word allowing the incorrectly altered word to go unnoticed! If that makes any sense?

I see this a lot on Facebook especially with the misuse of "your, you're,there, their and they're"

A panda walks into a café. He orders a sandwich, eats it, then draws a gun and proceeds to fire it at the other patrons.

"Why?" asks the confused, surviving waiter amidst the carnage, as the panda makes towards the exit. The panda produces a badly punctuated wildlife manual and tosses it over his shoulder.

"Well, I'm a panda," he says. "Look it up."

The waiter turns to the relevant entry in the manual and, sure enough, finds an explanation. "Panda. Large black-and-white bear-like mammal, native to China. Eats, shoots and leaves."

I confess to being a pedant when it comes to spelling and grammar. That is not to say I always get it right but literacy and numeracy are basic life skills and can be very important.

I hear what is being said about those with difficulties but I think that the modern use of social media with the need to shorten words or use alternative spellings has produced an acceptance that correct spelling does not matter.

On the other hand, one definition of communication is message transmitted, received and understood. If that happens then I guess it's job done.

Languages evolve, or we would still be using medieval spelling, so we would have a real problem using the 14th century spelling of flybarless head or octocopter!

I am sure this post will be scrutinised by those more pedantic than I am. lol, sorry M8, IIRC, WTF.

                      Spelling mistakes!

David the whole point of communication is just that, to communicate. I do not see that mis-spelling or lack of pronunciation really makes that much difference as long as you are understood. Maybe in a job interview or indeed the classroom it may be policed a little more but on a forum or social media abbreviation, dots and comma's are really just time consuming lol

cant disagree wiv that at all cos its really the social media thingy what has changed the perceptiun of wot is right and rong in the english language.

However, I assume that many teenagers these days think that their 'text-speak' is normal and will struggle with more formal uses of spelling and grammar and that will certainly affect their future success in life.

English language should be taught well in schools and we can always row back from there in certain situations - like social media.

                          Everyone makes genuine mistakes all the time during their posts and I don't see that as being an issue. I guess as long as the message is transmitted then it's fine, but;

'I just brought a new heli' - so which is it did you bring it or buy it? It's not a simple spelling mistake, it's not being pedantic, it's a completely different word with a completely different meaning. If they cannot work that out, it's not a learning difficulty thing it's just being thick. I agree wholeheartedly with the OP.

I confess to being a bit of pedant too. It's not so much that this is a forum - it's more that social media reflects modern society. In an era when globalisation is becoming more and more important, and kids from other countries are learning not only their own grammar, but other languages too - I think it's important that British children also learn the basics such that they can succeed more in their careers. And in the process, keeping the UK relevant on the world scene.

Grammar and spelling are akin to the foundations of our language. Sure, the spoken tongue evolves, but that shouldn't mean that grammar isn't important. Punctuation makes a difference too. The "Eats, Shoots and Leaves" joke I posted above is a bit of fun, but it makes a point about why grammar can be very important. Many jobs rely on unambigious communication, jobs where a misunderstanding can cost time, money or worse, lives.

I think there is no shame in promoting correct use of the English language. Lest we all start using "color", "center", "favorite" etc... :-(
