Think the leisure battery setup might be cheaper but its difficult to quantify.
I looked into both options and decided skip past the leisure batteries, too heavy and very limited in how much charging you can do with big packs. They're not really made for prolonged high current drain.

a generator is the better option but does cost a little more but not much more if you go the same route I did with the 2nd hand kipor jobbie

As for running cost, I estimate it takes 1.5 litres of petrol to run my kipor 1000 Genny all day long, running at full power charging 6S packs via a pl8. That transpires to about £2 in petrol per day which for portable mains electric is brilliant IMO.

as others have said, the Genny has come in handy for other situations aside from field charging

Everything seems cheap in america but also a bit crappy at the same time.

Sent using the wireless magic of my Galaxy SII via crapatalk.

Yeah, that one was at the cheap end. You can get a decent one for about $440. They particularly cheap around here as every tom dick and harry, or Bob, Bill, and Pedro wants one after the storm.

Look at it from a different angle , 2x leisure batteries will only have a scrap value after 3-5 years when they will not hold a charge , a well maintained Honda will run for thousand's of hours and still have a value .
On a thread in Australia a guy has run a Honda eu20 for close on 10,000 hours with regular servicing it is only just started to use some oil !

Open frame generators are very noisy !

Good God mine should last for eternity,I brought my EU10i brand new 2 years ago and I guesstimate 20 hours on it,certainly no more

I'm soon going to give it the second oil change its had.

Before everyone says Honda and the noise jokes start, seriously take a look at a used Kipor IG1000 genny. I got one (the 89db version at that) and you can barely hear it. I put it about 10m away from the pits, and once something's in the air you can't hear it at all.

I've used it quite a bit and it works great and starts every time.

The Kipor ones are immensely popular among RC-ers of all sorts it would seem then. Most of the car racers I know who have gennys have a Kipor. Might buy one myself, just because.
