Threads by FuturaSE are always a good laugh. There is a lot here that I don't understand (but that's not unusual). What I do know is that if you connect two 9v batteries in parallel you won't get 18volts.

Nooo... you need to put them in series to get 18 V.
Be careful - the EL backlight is powered by an inverter circuit that generates a couple of hundred volts AC to drive the EL panel - that inverter might not like 18V if it's designed for 12V.
Can't you just power the backlight off the TX main battery? Or do you want it switchable seperately?

i was about to say that until i read your post
2x 9v in parrallel =9v (you add the capacity together of the two batteries eg 120 mah + 120 mah = 240 mah)

if you connect in series then you get 18v
9v + 9v = 18v (if both batteries are the same mah then there is no difference in capacity of the new pack eg 120mah on both you will get a total of 12 mah)
edit:- it should read 120 mah here not 12 mah

agree at Kev seems there is no other way then going lipo this time

But i cannot balance this lipo ever.. I always have to charge it without balancing.. guess lifetime will reduce because of this but we will see
