  • Auto's how high for it to be a proper Auto?

It's something that got me thinking yesterday at the field, spent two packs just auto's. When I come in to land most 50% of the time I probably chop the TH at 6-12ft but to me that really isn't a auto as you would really be hard pressed to mess it up from 12ft I think anything over 50ft is a proper auto, yesterday I was probably 80ft plus up which is enough to do some good damage to heli if you get it wrong and high enough that you do have to manage to the collective and cyclic to get it down safely.

For me that would be a bag of bits (-; but you got me thinking, that really would be a buzz sure would get the adrenalin pumping, one day I might try that perhaps.

I had one of my expensive helis lose power inverted at 12 feet..made a very nice damage free landing on the head button on grass - so it's another option

Millie0812 (Don) does his auto's from pretty well out of sight with his 600 and Shauny does them from a very serious height (read little dot in the sky) with his 450, and they normally come down with remnants of ice on them LOL. So I guess a "proper" height is when you can barely see it......

Me, only ever done three (all forced) and only one was OK, so I don't want to practice crashing.....Mmmmm

I think once the heli is actually autoing, the height doesn't matter - then it's just a matter of eyesight.

+1 when the weight of the Heli falling keeps the blades spinning at the correct pitch the Heli will just 'glide' until you or the floor decide to slow it lol

I did that in an emergency when my power fell on the Goblin 700. Not intended, but I managed to save a lot of LOLLY. One link and the canopy pulled through the screws. Bigger washers fixed that.
Been there and done that, but never stop learning.

I'd say if the heli has enough height that if you did nothing about it the rotor would slow to the point of the heli crashing to earth like a sack of bricks then that is the height were it becomes an auto.

In other words, 3ft doesn't count....

T/H at 12 feet and you are in no-mans land.

It seems counter intuitive, but height must be your friend on an auto.

Plenty of time to get the blades spinning properly against the direction of travel. Can't say I am hugely experienced as the only heli I auto with confidence is my trex 500. The logo would be easier, but somehow my wallet just doesnt see it that way. But with the 500, there is still plenty of time when you get the angle and pitch balanced corretly. You can hear the noise in the blades change when you get it just right as they spin faster and start to resist decent.
