    • Zone like any competition Format only has space for a limited number of pilots. As it is now attracting some of the worlds finest Its understandable that the organisers have to make difficult decisions and be pro-active to prevent 'place blocking'

Its never nice to be to be turned down, but IMHO to fly at top level you have to earn your place proving your ability in domestic events first or expect to be squeezed when pilots places are limited.

For all those spitting the dummy out over this its just plain selfish and not just for the organisers, but you do diss-service to all the other people involved and interested in the Competition and Sport scene.

In reality we should all be supporting this and other UK events to ensure continuity in the future and be respectful to those who make it all possible.

      • Brian, I don't think anyone would argue with anything you've written and most would whole heartedly agree. However, if the organisers did say, and I wasn't there so can't say for certain that the first 8 had a place in the 2012 event then they should honour that. After all they wouldn't have had an event last year if it weren't for the support of those that gave this fledgling format it in the first place. I don't think anyone has spat their dummy just dissapointed that the early practice has gone for nothing.

The people who supported the event last year are the ones who have been cast aside this year.

Respect cuts both ways. If the promise about the top 8 last year getting places for this year is based on some misunderstanding then it should be easy to sort out and it would be best if it was sorted out quickly I'd have thought.

Amazed by your post Brian every one of the turned down pilots has earned a place IMO.
As for spitting out dummies? they are just upset, Zone was nothing last year infact lots of pilots never turned up for it!!!!!! and the ones that did put on a great show,as for the international element last year sorry forgot who they were.

It's just a shame that they have to chase after what was promised.

Thanks Brian for your comments, and a great way of putting it.
I understand fully that people are upset they did not get in, but look at it this way
                1) Zone is an international event IN the UK, bringing back that level of competetion back to us.
                2) it always was even last year a international event, but being new, the international interest was low.
                3) Stu had nothing to do with picking the top 24, this was done indipendantly by the judges, so they did not get acussed of being favorable to someone, that i think was very fair.
                4) these were picked on results leading to this event, if you were at intermediate level at the 3d champs, then the likely hood you would get in to an international top level event was very low, you wouldn't expect to get sellected into the masters class at 3d masters if your previous results were that.
5)All pilots that have entered be it excepted or turned down, have been offered free entry, free camping and put on the reserve if they wish, some have already excepted this already.
The "8 pilot thing" that got mentioned once and then everyone jumped on the band wagon, was never offered, if so why did all the pilots re-apply, i think there must have been confusion over where there are top 8 seeded pilots, so please if you are just saying it and have no idea, please think about what you are saying first.
                6) The whole point of Zone was to be international, and not to step on the toes of 3d champs, in fact there has been discusions between both groups to make sure that doesn't happen.

I myself seen just due to the massive responce to this thread, it shows how popular this new format is, and maybe that shows that as 3DX, there needs to be country based events too, like the 3dx events qualifies pilots around the world to the 3d masters, maybe the same can be done with Zone in the uk and accross the world, i for one would offer straight away to help Stu and Adie make that happen if that could happen, not that it can happen this year, but maybe in the future.

Please also think, the boys have put alot of work into the event and encourage the pilots back to these shores, i remember how much of a fuss was kicked up when the masters left our shores, and everyone in the uk was so disapointed, so look people they are coming back, its what you wanted. A TOP LEVEL event in the uk.

Enough said from me on this subject, but please guys let your emotions drop, before you comment again, dont push another event away

Nicely put together James, just one point I don't think anyone pushed the Masters away. Various reasons surrounded that, I wouldn't have thought lack of support or people being dissapointed at not getting in was one of them. I'm going though and so are the rest of the family As long as Duncan isn't judging I want to see him show them how it's done.

Well put James, but an early explanation of how the entry criteria was met would have put a stop to all the disappointment.

It would be really nice to see a mini zone for all the not so international pilots as this format is a real crowd pleaser .

                        • Big worldwide event plus British weather equals hello better country to hold it in.

Wish them all the luck but it will be abroad within 5 years

Wasn't going to it anyway but just sorry for the UK chaps that I know were hoping to compete

                          • This whole mess is less about what the events wants to be and all about how it was handled.

When you have someone announcing they are flying in the event before the entries are even closed and before the judges have apparently picked the contestants it begins to look a lot more like an 'invitational' than an open competition.

If you ignore the 'confusion' around the top 8 being promised a place this year, all that was needed was to state that the competition was only for those who are already active on the International scene and the expectation level would have been set.

Statements like 'International Media attention will give better sponsorship opportunities for the pilots.' will only encourage those who have not yet got that level of attention to think the competition is for them. When the pilot list is actually announced it will be interesting to see if any of the selected group have the slightest need for more 'attention'

Given how much the event had to rely on local talent last year to even exist, it seems at the least churlish to not even allow a few of those who helped it start, to fly, even if they stood little chance of progressing.

It seems to me that it could have been handled a whole lot better than dumping the problem on the judges and trying to avoid blame for mishandling the expectations of those who were so clearly disappointed to just get an email, after waiting and preparing for so long in anticipation.

                              • Having read all 8 pages of this thread now, I'm of the opinion that we should support any UK competition that comes our way.
Lifes too short to not go just because you didnt get in. Mark T is right in his points made about the organisation of this years event but laying that aside, it will be great to see the best once again without having to travel abroad and if we get the chance to see people like Tariq fly then its gotta be worth it.

                                Cheers
