  • Newbie Intro and Dilema

    Hi All.

My names Alex and Im from Essex and looking to get into Helicopters (surprise surprise lol). I have previously owned a blade mcx and got bored very quickly with the limited flight that this heli provides, so I sold it with the intention of getting the MSR to progress to fixed pitch.

Now, this may seem quirky, but I have just 'youtubed' these little quadcopters that are on the market, and I am astounded by what these little micro machines can do. Ive always dismissed these quadcopters because of their strangeness, but I am actually beginning to like the idea of these mini machines. From what I can see at the moment from videos is that these little machines can do some cool things that the msr cant do and vice versa, and I am really torn between the two. They both have their pros and cons, but both can lead to complete different directions over time. I honestly thought Id have a trex 450 in a few years time, but now it looks like I could have this rather strange hobby of the 4 legged creatures.

My ultimate aim is to have fun, fly in my house and fly in the park! Maybe I should just go heli and quad and see what both brings.

Thanks for having me guys, and any info on quads will be much apreciated.

    Thank you.

    Alex (Essex)

Hi Alex welcome to the forum. There are a few guys on here flying Quads, mainly for " first person view" or ariel photography. When you say your astounded by what they can do I assume you mean roll and flips? Quads are no where as near aerobatic as helicopters can be, so If I were you I would gather as much info as possible about each before spending your money, theres nothing more frustrating than buying something and then immediately realising its not what you thought or wanted.First thing is to decide what you want to do with it

Hi and welcome to the forum

I understand your uncertainty. If you want to progress on to bigger helis then don't get the quad. Or if you do then also get the MSR. You will learn much more from the MSR in my opinion and ultimately you will get more from it.

The MSR and the small quads like the Hubsan X4 can be flown almost anywhere but a 450 size heli is starting to get a big to fly in a park... especially as model flying in most parks in the UK is general not permitted by bylaw so if anything went wrong you would be on a very sticky wicket and getting insurance to fly in parks is all but impossible. Your best route when you are ready for the 450 is to find a club and there are plenty of excellent clubs in Essex and loads of Essex guys are on this forum to help you find one near you.

In the meantime, learning to fly an MSR or quad is fun around the house (if you are careful to protect furniture/tv etc) or in the park if there is almost no wind.

So in short... if you just want a bit of fun with something small then the small quads are OK but if you go for a micro quad like the Hubsan X4 then I don't think it will offer you much more than the MCX. The MSR on the other hand will be a significant step forward and might be a bit of a handful for you at first and you would learn a lot from it. Your next step after that might typically be to an MCPX or 130X before the 450.

I definitely recommend the MSR over a quad but whatever you decide, you will get some great help and advice here.

Alex, bear in mind that the msr is a beginners heli - it's designed to be stable for learners - not acrobatic. Once you can fly a helicopter though, the boundaries of what single-rotor can do will blow your mind.

The videos you've seen of quads however are pretty much the limit of what they can achieve. They can flip ... just! But not much more ...

In contrast, here's one of the best pro pilots showing what a relatively entry-level heli can do!

Everything Tom says is spot on. I think you will get much more out of this hobby if you stay on the heli path. Quads can be a fun distraction. If I could recommend anything for you it would be the MSRx - I've had mine a week, perfect for indoor, good enough to learn enough of the proper skills to transition on to CP / FP. You would be better off investing in a DX6i, and MSRx, and then maybe an 120sr or then a 130x. You might even get a bit more fun out of your MCX with the DX6i. BTW bear in mind that that video is 'Bert Kammerer' one of, if not the best, RC heli pilots in the world. You might get as good as him one day though!
