Thanks guys for the advise so far. I am looking at the 130x along with the Dx6i One question though does the Dx6i work with most heli's?

it will work but this is a huge jump from your syma 107!!! My advise is get Phoenix V4 flight sim they have the 130x model in it as well as hundreds of others CX included. Then you will be able to see the difference in control skills needed and make it easy on yourself and wallet for what you want to buy!

where tx are concerned I'd go dx8 all the way! I got me the dx 8 and love it never regretted it. Bought my friends lad a dx6 for Xmas and hate it. It feels cheap and nasty compared to the dx8 from holding it to gimbals and the screen is well hard to read no back light.

So if you get yourself a dx8 and Phoenix flight sim you'll go a long way in my experience and soon be able to answer most of your questions on which model...

kings Lynn model shop have been the best for prices over all for these 2 items and many of their helis

Get a mode 2 transmitter. In fact, unless you go out of your way to get a mode 1 most transmitters sold int he Uk are going to be mode 2 but do check when you buy it won't you.

Not true. Mode 2 is most popular on both sides of the ocean.

Well, when I flew at a model club in Florida everybody, and I mean everybody, was mode 1 and they said that mode 1 was by far the most popular there. Perhaps it was a Florida thing... or just that club then.

As you say, that isn't the point... as everyone says... get a mode 2 in the UK.

Regarding DX6i versus DX8. I would say that for a newbie, the DX6i is perfectly adequate and comes in at roughly half the price of the DX8 (ie. about £100 versus £210). Sure, if you're in this hobby for the long term, you'll end up with a DX8 anyway, so going straight there cuts cost in the long run.

However, it's a higher up front cost, and more money gone if you later realise this hobby really isn't for you ...

I use mine on a PC but if the software also comes for MAC im sure that it will function the same. The software comes with a cable that will plug into your mac via usb and the other end into your tx trainer jack. The software will run and you will be able to choose from a list of helis, and locations to fly and then its just like the real thing but less expensive when you crash

Mine has really helped me come a long way...

The Phoenix sim comes with the right cable. In fact, it's more than just a cable - it has a bit in dongle that allows the software to work. The software looks for this dongle as a form of copy protection.

For a Mac - you need to run Windows - either via bootcamp, or via VMware/parallels. You can only use the virtual options though if you have a high-end mac with a very good graphics processor. My macbook white can only run Phoenix via bootcamp.

The simulator is just software but it comes with a special USB cable which plugs into the computer at one end and the transmitter at the other.

I don't know which ones run on a MAC... I am a PC kinda guy

swash links - but I think some are included in with the heli but they are just a couple of quid so I bought some extra and they tend not to break but they can ping off and get lost!

That is all I have needed so far after 3 months. Blades are holding up well and that is after loads of crashes.

Just a small bit of advice that will help you not only reduce the crash damage on all your helis but also is a good habit to get into for when you move on to bigger helis... set up you transmitter to use throttle hold to reduce power to zero. This may not mean much to you at the moment, I realise that, but keep it in the back of your mind and find out about hitting throttle hold when you are about to crash instead of lowering the collective. It is easier to learn to use throttle hold when crashing right from the start when learning to fly your first heli rather than have to learn to do it later.

I have only ever used throttle hold when crashing, instead of reducing power with the stick, and I found the transition to CP helis very easy because I was already used to hitting throttle hold immediately before a crash instead of lowering the throttle/collective lever (on the left in mode 2). I am sure it has saved me loads of cash!
