  • I have the bug!

Hi my name is Paul, a 45 year old plumber.

My son got me a S107g for Christmas and now the bug that I had as a kid has returned In a post it was advised to buy a Blade CX2. Is this better than what my son bought me? Can you please give me a link to where I could buy the blade please?

    Paul

Welcome, you will find it somewhere in these shops:

    Blade
    Helicopter Kits - Planes & Helis[117]}
    Fast Lad Performance

I'd recommend getting BNF (i.e. without transmitter) and buying Spektrum DX6i separately, this way you won't have to buy new transmitter for each new model. Spektrum is good for all E-Flite Blade helicopters (and many more, as long as they have matching receiver). You will also need LiPo accumulators to match your heli and a charger, so watch you wallet shrinking - I was told it is common condition among RC heli crowd !

        Hi Paul.

I'm Alex, also 45, and also recently bitten by this hobby. I started with an S107g in November, quickly outgrew that, and got an S800G (well, we fly around the office!). Now just got a V911 (because it is very cheap, only £30), and fixed pitch. If I get the hang of that, then it'll be a 130X or nano, to see if I can fly a collective-pitch heli. And if I'm still enjoying it, then moving up to something bigger (Align 500 size).

However, before that happens, I'm going to try and meet the local heli flying club and actually see the bigger heli's up close, get some advice on what to get next, etc. I regard the little ones as 'toys' as they can't really hurt you - the big ones start to look a lot more serious and I guess insurance has to be got just for 3rd party cover.

        Cheers
        Alex.

          Welcome to the forum

Exact same coaxial that got me hooked! I dived in at the deep end and got a Blade 4003d, scared the crap out of me first time I spooled it up. Had it hovering but the gyro went nuts on take of and caught me off guard which resulted in a nasty crash. So decided, after advice on here to get a Blade 130x and have been learning on that as well as Phoenix sim. The 130x is imo a great learning tool and also very capable in the right hands. It takes hard landings and crashes very well and is meant to fly/act more like a bigger heli. It is not a living room bird tho.

If you really think heli's are something you will be sticking with, the learning curve is a long one. Then my suggestion is get a Dx6i Tx(transmitter) a Blade 130x and a hand full of Overlander 450mah LiPo's and get in the air! Also Phoenix sim is a good idea, crashes are free! Great for training the thumbs and learning new moves.

Others may disagree but this is coming from a noob that really wanted to get stuck in so skipped the fixed pitch heli's.

          Most of all, have fun!

Does the transmitters not come with the heli? Or I can buy a transmitter thats a better one like the Dx6i you suggested? What is Overlander 450mah LiPo's? I suppose I am showing just how new I am

The 130x is only available as a BNF(Bind&Fly)so no Tx. Other heli's do come with Tx's but are only really a once use item. The Dx6i will last you a long time through your heli journey, so worth getting. Many Blade heli's are available as BNF's so you buy the heli without the added expense of another Tx. Works with Phoenix sim as well. It will save you monies when it comes to getting bigger heli's. Sorry, yes Overlander 450's are LiPo's. Great for the 130x.

O I see got it now The transmitter is a 6 channel. Is the 130x hard to fly? I got the hang of the S107 which is 3 channel. (most of the time )

So the battery is removable on this model? I have been looking on rc-hero.co.uk and they have those items

                  Thanks for your help

The S107G is really, really docile and easy to fly. The next step up is a fixed pitch helicopter which is harder to fly, and then the collective pitch ones. The 3 channel coax S107G self rights and is really slow in forward flight. I've never even attempted at 130x, but I imagine it is considerably harder to fly than my little V911 fixed pitch (and cheap clone of an Align 100 if memory serves).

                        Welcome Paul,

think we all pretty much started by receiving a toy heli as a present - i have my brother to blame for that 3 years ago.

Thanks guys for the advise so far. I am looking at the 130x along with the Dx6i One question though does the Dx6i work with most heli's?

                            Hey Paul,

In answer to your question - Yes! - The Blade CX2 is better than the S107g by a considerable margin. The S107g really bears very little resemblance to either real helicopters, or the model helicopters that most people fly on this forum. Fundamentally, it is a toy - designed to be extremely simple to fly and sold in toy shops the nation over by people who know very little about RC helicopters. It basically can only go up and down "properly". It can turn the tail (rudder) by varying the speed of the two main rotors, but forward flight is achieved by a fan at the end of the boom which tries to tip the heli forwards or backwards. Lacking a swashplate, it does not have the proper control surfaces of more complex helicopters, and is very slow in flight. Also, being basic in nature, the controls on the transmitter are different to most beginner or advanced RC helicopters.

The Blade CX2, although a co-axial is much closer to "proper" RC helis. It has a basic swashplate and the transmitter uses the right controls on the right sticks - so your learning from the start the same thumb movements that will fly big, collective pitch helicopters. It's an example of a 4-channel, fixed-pitch (FP) helicopter. There are other helis in this class that would equally make a good starting point (eg. Blade 120SR - which is a traditional single-rotor design).

The next step up is 6-channel, collective pitch (CP) helicopters. Most helicopters in this class are really intermediate to advanced in nature rather than the more beginner friendly 4-channel FP machines. The Blade 130X mentioned here is an example of this. However, I really wouldn't class the 130X as a beginner heli personally - maybe an intermediate!? Certainly, you can begin on 6-channel CP helis, and historically, 400-class helis are popular for this purpose.

I heartily recommend you take a look at RC Helicopters, The Most Fun And Rewarding Of All RC Hobbies. - it's a great site for beginners, and explains a great many of the terms used in this hobby.

Good luck - and welcome to the forum!

                            Cheers. Tom.

You can use a DX6i on most helis if you use a spektrum receiver on the heli. Probably better to look for a 7 channel TX such as a DX7. These can be picked up for peanuts and it gives you a little more options going forward
