Are there lots of mods needed for the 130x to fly right? It concerns me that so many people are modding these helis from the off.

I'm sure everyone has had different experiences with the 130x, but here's mine. It flew great out of the box, really solid compared to my mcpx. Before any pilot induced crashes, I had a tail servo motor wire come away in flight, I re soldered it and then the other one did the same bout 3 flights later! I was chasing tail wag for ages all up and down the drivetrain for ages after that.

I have installed metal A gear, KDE tail case, KDE main rotor housing, Lynx tail slider and these have all been great (The rotor housing was probably not necessary but it's not going to break). The best upgrade I did was to install an eFlight DS35 servo on the tail. There are many write-ups on helifreak about this, but it instantly cured my tail wag and I was able to raise the gain once again. The KDE tail case is also excellent and removed tons of slop (watch the KDE installation vid) as did the Lynx tail slider.
Also Hyperion 400mAh batteries have been great, and I balanced my tail blades with tape.

I realise now my original tail servo was jittery and not up to the job. I had cleaned the tracks, adjusted the gains all the way up and down and had a free and smooth drive train but when I put that DS35 on it was like night and day. The other upgrades were worthwhile too, the rotor head to a lesser extent. It flies fantastic again now, and I love it. I have been able to progress my flying from the sim into backwards flight and inverted both ways in to a real heli at my local park with this 130X, as I am rarely able to get to my club field to fly my bigger helis. I flew my mCP X to death and I tinkered with that a lot too but it won't get a look in any more. the mainshaft on the 130 holds up way better than the mcpx too and the boom is stronger.

To sum up my feelings about my 130x, it's a great, great little heli but do be prepared to fiddle around with it sometimes to get it performing well.

(I have my left cyclic servo rod installed wrongly but I can't quite be bothered to swap it with my front servo just now)

that was my main concern, but unless your fairly advanced dont worry. Mine flies perfectly out of the box with the settings set out in the manual. Its not too twitchy but is very quick! ( that said im only 6 flights in! )

As Boggy said out of the box but worth just checking swash level & pitch @ zero otherwise flies surprisingly well
Today's outlook is fine for flying.

depends what you want it for and where you are going to fly it i would have thought, if you are just messing about in the house or garden then the 130x or if you want to take it a little bit further then i would recommend the 330x

But everyone has their own views on things and what they consider safe. If you think a total noob is safe with a 450 then i question your common sense massively. But that is just my take on that particular situation

I have read his second post and seen that he actually does have experience.
So until micros came along how did anyone learn? I think your facts are totally misguided, we'll just have to agree to disagree.

The idea that the only way to go is to buy into blade Helis and start at the smallest and work up is just marketing in my opinion. I bet that 90percent of the people on here learned on a 450 or bigger.
Agreed there are safety concerns but safety is about managing risks and being sensible.

Sorry to go off topic to the OP I'll shut up now.
